Me and JB talk about what constitutes as a "special" movie to us, and then we deep dive into The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Give me that dame even fucking bee.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Hereditary. Uh and then okay, we mentioned that was about to show, but we didn't really discuss yet. We could get into that.
SPEAKER_01Okay, you're gonna have to carry that conversation because I don't really remember that. That's fine.
SPEAKER_00I'm kind of okay to skip it. It might get too personal.
SPEAKER_01But like, and I told you the little bits personally, but then I think if you want to talk about it, I want to as well, because I did like it, but I'd have to go back and have to go back to watch it. I got it. You wanna watch it on it? Oh, that's right, you do it. I have it, but it is in your possession. Yes. No, we're gonna watch Fargo.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna Far- Okay, yeah. No, I really wanna watch Fargo with you, bro. Like, if you love Princess McDormand and Bernard O'Reilly, bro, I think this is my new.
SPEAKER_01I've seen this movie.
SPEAKER_00I know you have, but still, but you don't remember, right?
SPEAKER_01You remember, hey, the guy the the fucking Arthur with the Allen from Zodiac is the husband.
SPEAKER_00Yep, the Lord Bro, he's such a sick card in this. Okay, but yes, the Zodiac showed up later. I just had those knives in my car from chickens. Kill chickens. Oh my god. Um But yes, uh okay, so hereditary, what's special? That's a plot point. Yeah. Yeah. What's special?
SPEAKER_01Uh undetermined, basically, right? Because we kind of didn't really.
SPEAKER_00Oh, well, okay, well. Personal. I kind of said, well, it is based off a person, what it means. Preference. Um, well, I guess, yeah, what was your fucking anything? Okay, hang on, before we get to it. My ending for what it's special to me, I guess I'd say is it's about um I guess it's two two-phase, two prongs for me. It's about rewatchability immediately. Kind of the what kind of for me recently, like you said, like I'm just I'm in it right now. I keep getting excited every time I watch it. I'm watching it, I'm studying. Because eventually when I watch it, I'm rewatching because the camera rang is camera stuff. Uh, or acting performances, or it's like even just this part hypes me up so much. Uh I realized when I was watching Wrath of Man a lot, I found the fucking that the strings, the ram, wham, I found that shit kind of soothing a little bit. So it's like sometimes music becomes a vocal an audio stand. Okay. Um so it's about wow, I really enjoyed this ride, what it is right now. I want to keep going back for it. And then it's also the other half of what's special is about I guess it's also sometimes there's also about dude, there's a lot of different qualifiers are special. But again, like I said, if I can come back to it later, and if it still makes me feel the same way, if it maintains it mainly special. But I know some of them, some of them are just fucking grandfathered in. Like Jurassic Park will be grandfathered in, Pulp Fiction's grandfathered in, like, almost, and then it's also like, is it kind of is it? I don't want to say it's director grandfathered in, because I realize I was about to start naming it a bunch of Tarantino films. Um not even a bunch of spilbert, but some scrisazes are grandfathered in, but it's also like Casino and Goodfellas and the Departed. The Departed I like a lot. Yeah. Those three Scrisazes. But like, yeah. Those three are really, really good. Those, yeah. And it's like, but it's also, and then like I said, Disterbia's kind of Grandfatherin, but it's more like because I guess that's the special That's a sentimental special.
SPEAKER_01I guess you're right. And I feel like I'm not even like I don't I I guess I do have sentimental. That's what it means. I think that's what special means. That's what it means to you. Okay. Special to me, I guess. Well, I don't want to cut you off. No, no, but I feel like you're kind of. No, you're on a fucking scene road. So it's special to you then. Special to me would just be something that it's not like I look at it and I put myself back to where like I'm in an emotional state. Okay. That's to me is just nostalgia. And that's not that's not bad. It's not like it's not a bad thing. But like special to me would just be like after watching a movie, it it sticks with me. I could say, like, oh, I actually I love this movie.
SPEAKER_00I feel like we're talking about fucking things. Saying the same thing. It's I feel like you're a little more. I do I uh put emotional attachment to these things. You're absolutely right. Right, I could, because like I said, I use movies to escape? That to no, I use emotions to kind of uh process feelings. That's what I do. It's just it's also how like I literally mean movies in my fucking life. Where it's just like that's also like part of why I want to create and stuff. But uh but yes, that's I use them and I kind of process emotions through them, I process things, I need nose processing, like Ad Astra. Did I ever tell you about Ad Astra? The Rabbit Space movie?
SPEAKER_01Uh we've talked about it, I think, but I don't think you've said me anything that's I didn't realize how much bad my daddy issues were watching, you know?
SPEAKER_00Like it's just random shit. And here's the thing, I've only seen that movie once, and I consider that special because it pointed that out to me. I haven't gone I haven't gone back. But I've been wanting to go back because I also remember that sentimental value aside, there was some cool camera shit and there was some interesting change.
SPEAKER_01I thought it was like a really cool look really good. There's a good space shit.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, so that's another case of special with a side of sentimentality, I guess. But I've only went once, I've only seen it once, and I haven't gone back. And I'm kind of scared to go back to a little bit, because what if I'm like, oh, this isn't doing anything for me. Other than of course taking away the the story between the father and son stuff. Because that won't change no matter what. Okay. You know, so that's why another thing. And so So yes, I guess I do put more sentimental value in, so it's special.
SPEAKER_01But then it's like And even too, just like that where it's like Ad Astros, like, oh, like I looked at my relationship with my father, like that's that's very, very personal. Yeah, which is that's crazy. It's not necessarily that's not sentimental, but it's kind of s in the same ballpark, kinda, where it's like where it's just like a personal, where it's sentimental is very personal to you. Yeah, but that's always and so it's just special, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So then I think so. What's special to you is what's personal to you also?
SPEAKER_01No, not really. Just something I can really enjoy. Okay. Like I said, dude, uh, like I don't know, like I'm not hard to please when it comes to movies because I just want to be connected to it. Yeah, I get that too. Like um, Thunderbolts was r was fine. It was like a fun movie. I've seen it once, I'm not gonna watch it again. It was not special. It's not special to me. I agree, that wasn't special either.
SPEAKER_00It's like I had no personal connection. Because I guess like I said, it's whatever personal connections, and like we talked about before, you're projecting your you usually you can project yourself a little bit, or it's like you're using your mind to engage. And so it's like I do like to figure movies out, quote unquote, as I'm watching, if it's a first time watch. Uh I do like to just sometimes it's like some movies, it's like we said, entertain. Some movies I'm just expecting to be entertained. I'm not trying to solve or get it. I want to just have fun watching the movie. I'm not expecting anything. So like Wrathman is a I'm just having fun. Like, that's to me, that's Wrathman. Yeah. Zodiac is not a having fun movie. I don't know. Kind of. I think that movie. That one is. But so the also just the second half. I'm not gonna lie, like the first, the killings are creepy. Like they're chilling. Like when especially when the couple by the lake, like, I don't like to really sit here and be in that part. Like, like, I'll definitely put that on and then I'll go to the bathroom real quick. Or I'll put that on like that's a really chilling part.
SPEAKER_01That part in the lake is actually the guy survived that. Yeah, and uh both guys survived. The fuck off and dying, yeah. Yeah, and um he's like I've watched documentaries and he's talked about it and he's and he said that he can't watch that like he can't watch that scene.
SPEAKER_00No, nor should nor would he why would you want to or be able to do it? Because he's seen the movie.
SPEAKER_01That's that's he was I assume he was like uh they consulted him for yeah, I get that. And also too fun, like a cool little thing about it is that uh David, what's his name Fincher? Yes, yes, he sorry, he um he he was filming at the lake that they actually that they act that the attacks actually happened, and I guess the guy like he was with a cop or whatever and he was like saying like oh, um, yeah, this is where it happened. And so David Fincher is like looking and he's like, mmm, now I kind of want to shoot it over here, and that was acting and then later on being like something like the cop realized, like, oh yeah, actually David Fincher was right, and it was the attack over there, it wasn't over here.
SPEAKER_00Make sure he just wasn't covering his ass. No, yeah. Oh, I butchered that story, but it was like some cool little I mean you want to go into David Fincher talking about that. Like another thing was about like how the Zodiac claimed to have a gun, a flashlight on his gun, or whatever, and so David Fincher looked into the time in the six sixties, seventies, whatever, he's like, You could have no fucking flashlight on your gun like that, so then he probably used a regular flashlight now like this. Like he just did a little research like that type shit. Like this motherfucker, he like tried he they uh meticulous. So yeah, it's meticulous, and then also just like you fucking cold case file of this shit. Yeah, little true crime, like and then that's also what I like about this movie now, because again, I kind of came into that movie recently about it being special to me. Okay, and again, I won't even say it's that because I don't have I don't have any personal connection to that.
SPEAKER_01That's what I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_00Like, how is it special to you if it's not this one is straight up special for entertainment value because I haven't lost anything. Like, I like the actors also. I like the actors, I like the director, and so it's like because of those things. I'm already I have a proclivity for it. Like I'm gonna I'm already gonna like this, you know, so it's like that's I guess that's what's special for me, because that one I have no relationship like that, no personal cement.
SPEAKER_01But like my zodiac killer. Yeah, yeah. In my life, it reminds me of my zodiac killer. Yeah, like yeah, something like that. So like that's where I like I I can maybe like again it goes back to me being so easy to believe where it's like I've I can all those all my fate all my special movies, anytime I say a movie is special, it's like how you're feeling right now with that particular movie. And I feel like maybe you don't there's not many movies like that for you, would you say? Where it's just like the entertainment, like I just get such joy, or it's it's so entertaining, it's such a well-made movie, it's so good for me to sit down and watch that it's it's actually special.
SPEAKER_00Maybe, because there's a I don't know, because a lot of them I do add the personal sentimentality. Which I mean that's not wrong.
SPEAKER_01I've like I didn't say like bringing that up as wrong. I'm just saying like that's special.
SPEAKER_00But we need to clarify what special means. Yeah. Well, I get it.
SPEAKER_01But again, that that's where it's like, yeah, we need to clarify because it's different for you and it's different for me. What special means, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But I guess that would be, well then that narrows it down. A special without sentiment value, I guess.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you don't have it doesn't have to be.
SPEAKER_00It does, because I want to know which one has sentimental value for you. Any of them or none of them. Not my five movies right there.
SPEAKER_01I mean, sentimental value, I'll say this, Eddington, watching it was like such is and part of it why I didn't want to watch it was that uh I was like, bro, like we just got out of COVID, bro. I'm not trying to watch a fucking movie on it. That's under the movie. And it's like it's watching it is like, oh yeah, dude, we were acting like this for real. And it's just like, yeah, whatever side you're on, I'm more right-winging, I'll be honest. I'm more right-leaning, but we already and I think um I can that's what I loved about it, where it's like, of course, I feel like they're gonna make right sort of right-leaning things and things I can agree with. Like they're gonna make them bad. Which sometimes they do. This movie they did not. They I feel like they would it was a fair uh criticism of both sides, which is something cool, something special too, I think.
SPEAKER_00Like you don't see more one.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's it'll always whether it's right or left, I don't like that. Even if it's like 100% right, I think that's fucking cringe, just like if it's 100% left. Agreed. So uh for that to be like both sides, uh fair criticism. Yeah, I I love it. And just that, like, for like a special thing to me where it's like I look back at that and it's like, damn, like, it really wasn't that long ago, but it just feels like a lifetime ago, almost like we were really living our lives differently.
SPEAKER_00We still have been. It's changed ever since. I feel like life has changed every time.
SPEAKER_01I feel it's yeah, yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_00I know what you mean. Like it's it's never gone back to 100% normal before. Like we're as close to normal.
SPEAKER_01There's yeah, it there was like an ever there's like a lasting effect on like it's changed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, some shit has changed amongst the world, so to speak. Because they also learned they don't have to pay us that much than people can work from home. Like all that stuff. Uh all that other all those other repercussions aside from social and psychological.
SPEAKER_01I don't think it's necessarily that they don't have to pay us. It's that we work better from home because people are under or they're in a better space. Yeah, you don't have to deal with other assets. Yeah. And then that ended up being a problem because like people were getting all their shit done faster and they were still getting paid for full shifts, which is I'm okay with. Yeah. I mean get get what you can. Exactly. But yes, yeah, so it's sentimental value.
SPEAKER_00And it's because it reflects politics, that its volumes are.
SPEAKER_01Not necessarily that it's I mean, for me more so, it's more of just like we just took like that almost nostalgia feeling where it's like I'm looking back, I'm able to watch that movie and put myself back into that point of my life where it's like, damn, like I'm not necessarily put a point in my life or put it put myself in that point. It's more of just like I can look back and just see like, damn, like I actually remember that like I remember like just the the standing in line, the fucking arguments about masks and shit, it's just like kind of brought it all back to me. Okay. And so like that's just like like a like a what have you done for me recently kind of thing, where it's like I don't know how is that uh what have you done for me recently? Because I just saw that that movie's fairly recent in my memory. Okay. That's what I'm saying. Like and so like if you're saying like what oh what's sentimental to you.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I don't Okay, what about another thing? I guess that is a personal attachment. But I would say, what about something else that evokes feelings? Like I'll say like Speed Racer, it just gets me hyped as fuck. You ever seen Richard Jewel? Yes, that gets you hyped as fuck. So not hyped as hyped. But as far as like emotions, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_01As far as emotions, there's a part where um Kathy Bates, the mom, yeah, she's uh she's doing the speech and she's after she's done, she's like talking to a lore and she's like breaking down, crying, and she's like apologizing, saying like she wished she could have done better. Like when I was watching that, I felt like that was like an emotional that that hit me emotionally. Okay. And I wouldn't even say that's special to me. That movie's not that special. It was good.
SPEAKER_00What's a special one that hit you emotionally? That's why that's specific, bro.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I don't know. I don't think a movie's really that way. You don't feel so I I mean I'm sure I have, but I sure I can't think of one that doesn't make me feel. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Interesting. I want you to think about that next time. I'm just gonna be able to do it. It's like you said you just go for entertainment. Yeah, I'll give it a try, but I guess I go for entertainment too, but that's the thing. I don't expect to get into it until it makes me feel. Does that make sense? That's also how I guess I tie into it. And then I just attach that sentiment, the emotion value to it too, because it's hey, this is special because it made me feel. Which already talked about. That's what you said, old No Country for Old Men did. Did it make you feel maybe an emotion, but it made you feel like movies are what are you cinema or more than what they should be?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Okay. Yeah, like it definitely made me take movies seriously. I would say sense of wonder. There's like a like a before and after no country for roman like point in my life, kind of. That's a pretty big deal, bro. I was like, Yeah, well, I mean, well, absolutely, no country for a man is special to me. Yes. But I don't necessarily put like an emotion attached to it. Just goaded. That's my emotion towards it.
SPEAKER_00I feel like the emotion is fucking whimsy. Whimsy, yeah, it is peak. It is peak. Whimsy peak is funny. Not whimsy uh not whimsy. Um that thought it was funny. Uh whimsical. Whimsical, yeah. It wasn't to say. But it's also, I don't know. I was just trying to say, it it mystified you. I don't know. Or just it made you realize it made you feel like movies could be more. But I guess I don't know how to deteriorate that to an actual necessary feeling to it. But it's like I mean, that's what I mean by that.
SPEAKER_01I mean, even still, like, to go back to Richard Jewel, I guess, where it's like, I mean, hell, that scene stuck with me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So you said that movie is not special to you, or is I mean, it's alright, it's good.
SPEAKER_00Okay. But yeah. Like I only saw it once and it's like once too, but that shit was sad, I don't want to see it again. It was really sad, yeah. And but it's also like, that's not because it well, it made me feel sad, that's because that's what it's kind of going for. I don't know. It's the story, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I mean, I don't know, okay. You know, right. I don't know. I just uh I guess I don't really think of movies usually that way. Whereas I'm more of just like, oh, this was fun for me to watch, I really enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I get that. So I mean I started all a movie like that too. It's like I said, just if they elicit the response, then they elicit that response, right?
SPEAKER_01That's that's on because like uh with Richard Jewell, how it elicited that response from me, and then how you're saying the Infinity War, you know, you'd walk in and people were affected by it, and that's valid too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, how much they assign to their favorite character in this and it's a good thing. Which is valid too.
SPEAKER_01I mean I don't I don't agree with it, and I thought it was fucking corny.
SPEAKER_00But I'm How do we operate with somebody like you then guy? I didn't wonder why. I am an enigma. You you are, brother. What does he say?
SPEAKER_01What does Patrick say? The machinations of my mind is an enigma is an enigma or something like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think he just said that. Bro, a fucking SpongeBob reference right now. Throw it back like that, bro. Peak! Peak! Actually, it's underwater, it's not a peak.
SPEAKER_02Fuck.
SPEAKER_00You're right. Damn it. Depth. Depth, depth, hey, depth, peep. We say peak. Deep. Well, I love that we still went down this fucking this rabbit hole of what's special. Because I think it would be good to clarify from now on. That could be like a runner thing. Was this special to you? Or was it not special to you? And how do like I feel like did you feel?
SPEAKER_01How did that make you feel?
SPEAKER_00Kinda, let's be real, that's what I mean by process.
SPEAKER_01I mean, even though I guess I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I was like Master and Commander. Okay. That so that doesn't inspire me like the way Speed Racer does.
SPEAKER_01You're not like looking at it like, oh yeah, like the uh captain of that ship that's in my life. Like I I I No, I'm not. I'm not making fun of you, but it's like, right, like you're able to I don't know, is that movie special to you? Because I'm about to put words in your mouth if not.
SPEAKER_00It's a difference. Well, I think it's your kind of special. Okay. It's just entertaining special. Where it's just really, really good to you. Where you just really appreciate this film. Yes, and because of what it does as a film. Okay. I have another special category, another tenant online idea.
SPEAKER_01It's a picky motherfucker.
SPEAKER_00I am well qualifiers. Qualifiers, because I realize when you say this, it's like there are some movies I really, really enjoy just because of how they're structured and how much how movie they are. How movie they are. How movie they are. Now we gotta define it. Now we gotta define. Now we gotta movie movie. Master and Commander is a great example because I like um how movie it is, because I mean sure it's a little cinema. I mean at that time, like it's not like amazing, it's not computer graphics, but how movie it is in that it's a concise fucking plot of story, and it's just this happens and this happens, this happens, you know like a straightforward. Yes. Well I shouldn't say this happens and this happens. Like this happens and it and it sends them this, like when you're okay, like it's they say you shouldn't be when you're talking about your movie, or when they recap your movie, you shouldn't be like, and then this happens, and then this happens. Like I shouldn't have said about that. What I like about it is that it drives itself forward where it's like they wake up in the middle, just movie starts, we're waking up, and then because he thinks he saw something, it starts everything from there. It turns out he was right, it turns out we got fucked up. Because we got fucked up, we have to, you know, we had to go here. Uh because we had to go here, but it's also because Jack wants to fight that motherfucker, and because so he's like, Whoa, I'm gonna go after him, I'm going after him. We lose him completely. We literally lose the movie a little bit. Well, after, you know, we run into him a couple times, but it's just like we go like the perfect part about that is when they go to the Galapagos after his honey got shot, after the self-surgery. Like he was just like, I like I wanted to chase my prey, but I need to save my best friend slash maybe husband. As I told you, they're bond. They're C Bond. Uh they uh and then while he's there, uh fucking the doctor is chasing his own bird, thing he wants, and while he's doing that, he sees the fucking thing we've been chasing the whole time, you know, like and I'm like, I'm like that's just send him with me because like obviously it's a cheese it's a cheesy thing that they well everything's invented and cheesy, but it's just like I don't know. I mean like going forward.
SPEAKER_01And it's like I I think like looking at it that way, like I didn't even put it together that it's like, oh, like I mean, I put it together in the sense that like, yeah, he had to give up and to go save him, but then like the to put it that way where it's like, oh, like then the doctor was chasing his dream and then he came across the other guy's dream almost. Like that's kind of what you're saying, right? Yes, that's right. And it's like that's yeah, like I think that's really interesting. And you don't like for me, I didn't need to put it that way. No, but you putting it that way makes me appreciate it even more.
SPEAKER_00See, that's just extra layers to this. And then another thing I really like about it too is just like we end how we start. Uh beat the arms, they're called arms. It's like, okay, let's do it. Like, and it's just like in the beginning we're coming down and we're all or we're we're waking up, and then at the end we're just like, we're kind of cooling off this fight, but no, we gotta fucking get back into that shit. And it's not even the fact that they left it open-ended or whatever, but it's just like I like that this was like bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, kinda, you know, like it was and then there's so there's also things there's okay, goddamn, this is gonna this is gonna get a little nerdy if you'll bear with me. Like it's it's called uh it's do you know the name Dan Harmon? He was behind communities, behind Rick and Morty. Oh yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, yeah. Your favorite one of your favorite shows. Rick and Morty, absolutely. He has something called the story cycle or circle, and it's because he writes the episodes of Rick and Morty, and he writes so he knows how to write. And it's when he's telling about you write a story, it's like this this part of it is like introduce your character in their world, you know, introduce like what's wrong or whatever. So it's like it happens really fast in that. And that's like okay, but yes, and it's um like I won't break it down, but it's like introduce the character in their world, introduce the problem, you know, introduce what. Whatever is fucking up the world, whatever. And then it's like and then they gotta go on the journey, which is where they try to solve it. Whatever they do, they meet people that helps them along their way, this or that. Let's say they then at this point in the story that they're supposed to maybe they have a small victory, or they it's like they get what they want or they attain it. So like a good part of this is when Captain Audrey like it happens a couple times. He the first time this kind of happens is when he's chasing them in the storm. And he's about to get what he wants, is like he's about to get his prey, but it comes at a cost where they have to lose that shipmate on the side of the boat. And then it happens again where he's chasing them. Um is it like is it just it's storm? Oh fuck, or I guess he's chasing because I'm trying to remember, because they're calm seas before, and that's why the stupid red guy shoots the doctor on the deck. But then it's like then it happens again, and his world changes because he realizes, or so there's another part of the story circle. They realize the character realizes what they want, slash what they need, and it's whether or not they get the want or the needs. I think I told you about the want and need stuff. And so it's like what Captain Jack Aubrey wants is to kill the astronaut. What he needs is to realize like his people matter too. We're not just like like he exceeded his fucking orders past Brazil, a couple hundred steam out. Yeah, you know, like he is just fighting out of pride. He needs to be not so proud, man, even though of course. By a bing bada boom. That's his lesson learned later on. Um yes, it comes at a price. So then, because he was close to that ship, his doctor buddy gets shot, realizes that the price is too much, and he keeps going on, and that's when he makes his personal choice to stop chasing the astronaut, go to the Galapagos Island, we'll have a great time there. But then it turns out, while they're at the Galapagos Island, that's where the doctor is chasing his like the side thing over the so then it we goes back, and then because we're making an exciting movie, of course we're in this is how we introduce the final conflict, we chase them, and then of course, back to the beginning, where our character is in a in his new comfortable world, what his new regular, his new normal is after the event of the movie, in the story, so to speak. I mean that's kind of a weak case, like another good thing would be obsession. So, like Bear, Bear's normal is here, he's friend zoned and shit, right? He's friend zoned and shit here. Bear makes the wish, makes the wish. Um, oh you know, a bunch of crazy shit happens. Bear realizes, you know, he's at fault, so that she doesn't like, you know, like when he confirms, like, you know, the date, like he realizes shit's wrong and stuff, but he got what he wants, and then we have the cute montage, it goes too bad, um gets what he wants, but then it's uh at the cost where they go to the um the the party event because finally he's realizing that what he wants Nikki is a bad thing because what he did, you know, obviously he doesn't know it's him. That's his you know his final arc where he's gotta learn that in this part of the story. But of course that's when he realizes oh I could I want Sarah. Like if I like getting what he wants is Sarah also because he wants a stable, good, healthy connection, so to speak, or stable healthy, whatever he thinks he is. But uh like he's uh he's like, oh maybe I can get Sarah, like that's his world changing again, but then of course he can't because of his own actions, which is the whole magic nikki and just shit like that. So um so when movies do shit like that too, there's also like that.
SPEAKER_01So when a movie movies That's when a movie movies.
SPEAKER_00Oh when a movie follows movie shit, both camera way, both this story kind of structure, or even if they don't follow it, if it's out of it a little bit, or um it's like when I told you characters' wants and needs, and that's like that's what makes a good ending. So, like, let's say, so jack Captain Jack's want, he wants to capture the friendship astronaut. He gets his want at the end of the movie. He needs to maybe work on his ego and and you know, let's say he gets that at the end because he realizes you know, he promotes that other guy. He doesn't take the bigger ship, he gives it to the other guy, he keeps the HMS surprise. He's still buddy buddies with his buddy, and he's still a good job with his men. So it's kind of a weak good ending, but it's a good ending because he gets his want and his need. So there's a grid, so hang on. Um let's say good. It's like it's like good, bitter sweet, bitter sweet. We'll just call it sweet bitter for shits and giggles. And then bitter bitter. Like a bitter bitter ending. So good is wants and needs. His bitter sweet would be he gets he doesn't get what he wants, but he gets what he needs. Okay, so like uh want, so you get what do you say? I said you don't get what you want, but you get your needs. And then sweet bitter. You get your needs, don't get what you want, and then a bitter bitter would be you don't get your wants or your needs. It's like a very depressing fucking ending. Like um like let's say Zodiac. Okay, but for who so who's the who's the character in that one that's where we get to the main character protagonist thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I don't think I mean that's fine that you follow these definitions and stuff like that. You don't have to.
SPEAKER_00And that's what makes but that's what makes that's what makes it exciting when we don't, or how well they do, or differently it's yeah. This is all just like base map stuff, but however you play the game is how you want.
SPEAKER_01So I think it's like you could tie that to basically every story. You can't. Because stories they follow structure. Yeah, they follow a structure. And so you're just kind of mapping out a str like you're mapping out the structure to fit the circle.
SPEAKER_00Well, the structure is a circle. Well, this is Rand Harmon's example. Right, but I'm thinking, yeah, but that's his structure. Yes.
SPEAKER_01And so like you're you're you can break it down the structure of anything, really, of any movie.
SPEAKER_00Because that's how they usually because there is a structure to films inherently.
SPEAKER_01And story.
SPEAKER_00There's a structure to story inherently. And it's we've been telling the same fucking stories over and over again. It's like hero needs to go do the thing, or hero needs to go get the stuff. And you know, it's it's like it's so hard to be new, original, quote unquote. Because if you break down everything we've been watching, it's like they're all the same fucking stories, you know. Like even yeah, two, like, yeah, but then I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Like I've it's kind of like that part of South Park where it's like The Simpsons did it.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Right? It's like everyone's done it already. That's exactly what it's like. If you've ever thought, everybody else has thought also. So it's like That's why.
SPEAKER_00So that's why. That's why we mapped this thing out so we can study how well they do or don't, kinda. And so special movies are when movies movie like this. Uh God, I'm trying to think of another one that just does this really well for me. Wrath of see, I keep going back to Random Man because that's the most recent one where no real sentimental value, no real personal attachment for me on there. I just got into it a lot right now. And it's not like I had any real special uh it's not like Jason Statham has a special place in my heart or Guy Ritchie, but I like after watching it, I was well, I I I just went on a huge Jason Statham kick. So like right now, Jason Tatham's kind of fucking special in my heart. And like I just added a couple more of this. But Wrathman, that one's it's not even how well that one movies. It's just that one's just fun, right? That one's just entertaining. Exactly. That one's that's the way I look at it. And then well, I also looked at it structurally. I was like, because I had fun with it because this movie's doing something that's a good one.
SPEAKER_01Well, also, to be fair, like you've watched that more than once, I assume? Yes, right.
SPEAKER_00But when I first watched it, well, it's just because my mind's I guess because like you said, you just keep taking it face value. And I do too, but I just can't help it. Like, okay, like in this beginning, they're clearly gonna we're just showing them randomly. I mean, I do that too.
SPEAKER_01To a certain extent, but it's more of just like it ain't really thinking, like I'm not like after that movie, uh huh, I'm not thinking about that movie anymore. I get that. Like, and then not like it wasn't good. Yeah, because I liked it, but it was just like I'm not it like if you were to I like if you're just make me do this circle out, I wouldn't even be able to fill that out with with this movie.
SPEAKER_00Because it's not like I'm it's also not the easiest, as you can see, I'm not fucking everything. But I get like because what's his lesson in that? He just wants revenge and there's no real lesson for him. Like that's never gonna be he's never gonna get his want and meet, because his want is his fucking cut his son back. Like, you can't, his son's dead. You know? And what is he really? He doesn't need revenge. Exactly. So that's fine. It's it's so it's not gonna be you know, it's not like that it applies, but it's just like sometimes your character's not gonna learn anything. And that's why there's some that are just pure entertainment, like we say. And I would put Wrath of Man. Is it even right there? It's there, it's a second-class one, it's right above Zodiac. Oh shit, yeah. That little pile is off that board. Uh except for I think I just put I was right shut right on top. But um, but like that one for that one, that one did a little movie moving for me, just structure wise. Because what it really was is like they didn't give us all the information, and we find all the information out later on, because they finally it's kind of like the alien show, all done in a movie. Like, remember how we talked about the alien show, or and I was like, you're kinda right about that, where it's like they could have just gave us all this information in the beginning or whatever, but they didn't because they knew we wouldn't keep watching because they tipped it. Because this is a bad show. Oh yeah, I'm sorry. No! I'll be s I'll I'll be honest with you, bro, I'm kind of quite agreeing with you. I I don't I don't even want to get into that. I think I don't yeah. It's okay, we don't have to. But if there is another season, I don't have Hulu anymore, so it's okay. I don't have to even worry about it now. But so like It's on FX. Oh, we don't have um you don't have cable. I'm sorry. Um, no, but yeah, but so like so Wrath of Man is like that. So like to me, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, well, yeah, and like to what you're saying with Wrath of Man, there is like it is interesting. Like, I remember watching the movie, and and it starts off pretty strong too with yeah with the with the truck robbery scene. Yes. And you only you're it's only through the truck's point of view. And then you hear the audio of like you just shot a fucking kid.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you just shot a fucking kid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's like so and they're going by numbers too, right? Which is obviously one, two, three, yeah. We don't know anything.
SPEAKER_00Interesting in its own right, because then you're like, I know this fucking like and then that's why then of course Jason Statham's a mysterious guy, and we don't know who he is and what his motivations are, and it's like, why is he joining this armor company? Like at first, when I'm watching that, I was like, okay, he's probably gonna be just Jason Staton's a badass, and this is gonna stop the robbery and keep getting robbed. Yeah inherently just because he's it's he does his job. Yeah, and he's just he's starting, we're just starting like this, okay, fuck it. But that's why I was like, that's kind of a twist on the traditional formula. He's actually not the hero, so to speak. He is another bad guy, and they just happen to fucking kill this bad guy's kid, and this bad guy is just gonna out bad guy the bad guy, so to speak. Which I guess in that sense is just a pure revenge flick, but I'm like, even that, so if you want to just say, oh, it's just a pure revenge flick, it was done a little differently. So you know, just a little this.
SPEAKER_01And I like when I say it's a revenge flick, that's not even a negative.
SPEAKER_00No, but it's just like, yeah, I don't I don't know It's just yeah, but I mean just how if you want to re reduce a thing to baseness, I guess it's like it's a revenge flick.
SPEAKER_01Just it went back to what I said earlier about like everything not every but like you know it's we've been telling the same stories all you can essentially even though it's not like uh whatever, you could fit even the Wrath of Man where it's like it is a revenge flick, but there's also some some nuance to it with with like the flipping it on its head with it being actually like it ends up being a revenge flick and not like just some kind of action hero. Yeah, just like an action hero. So it's like you could even fit that circle, that that structure you could fit it to that.
SPEAKER_00Kinda. Yes. It's also again about how well his character developed. It's a this circle is more for your character story and journey. And so he would have one. We'd have to really fucking watch it and be like, okay, that's probably point one, nine point like some of it's kind of generalized. Like this, like again, this is it's like what they say in Pirates' Caribbean. These are more like guidelines than rules, you know? But it's like it's meant to have a lot of. And like I said, this is also specifically Dan Harmon's version of this. There are probably other writers that have their own versions.
SPEAKER_01There's a book here, and maybe it's literally the exact same thing, just not in circle form where it's like probably, or worded differently. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00This man wrote this, this is about how to write a screenplay. He uh he does the same thing where he's telling you like like the thing where like save the cat. Like, oh, you need your hero to save the cat so we know he's a good guy, which is how the title is. Like, he has little screenwriter rules. I still haven't even read this fucking book all the way through, but like that's a thing where it's like there's little, there's just structures for everything, kinda. Well, at least for this that they structurize.
SPEAKER_01No, okay, so with that save the cat, where is that good? Like, like is he saying, like, oh, you need to have like your character is gonna save the cat to show that he's a good guy? Yeah. That's a good thing. Like, follow that rule.
SPEAKER_00Not that it's a good thing, but that's just a rule to have a lot of different things. That's just what people do. If you want to show your guys good, save the cat. Have them do something. But have them do something like, yeah, yes, right off the bat to show. So, like. Hmm. Trying to think of something good, but bears the opposite with him and Sandy the cat. What did you do? He didn't save a cat. He did the opposite thing. Like that, so to speak. And then of course like it's a kind of a weak one, but it's like, you know, he didn't really save any he had no saving cat moments or whatever, you know?
SPEAKER_01Um which goes to like how like he's not really how you follow those, how you follow these, or how you flip it on a side, or how you don't follow these rules, kinda. That's what's m that's what's interesting. That's what drives you. Because if you're able to follow these rules and and tell a story really well, or opposite, where if you're able to change the rules and still tell a story really well. And get away with it, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Otherwise, or some people will be like, oh, this makes no sense. Because like you broke the rules but nobody gets it or likes it. So yeah, just everything's still gotta be done.
SPEAKER_01Just because you go against the grain does not necess does not mean it's going to be good. Yes. You could actually it could actually be bad. That could still be bad for it. Yeah, just like or because go just like going with the flow is actually can be seen as corny and I don't like it. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Or though they're like, it's just entertainment, it doesn't make me think or feel or anything. Turn your brain off. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01I don't watch a movie that way.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you don't? So the guy who's been saying that like the living last hour now.
SPEAKER_01I use my brain when I watch movies.
SPEAKER_02I like to be entertained.
SPEAKER_00Yes, but you use your brain while you're entertained, yeah. Just not your feelings and emotions. I guess not, really. I guess not, yeah, bro. When's the last time a movie made you cry? Or has they ever or even just feel sad?
SPEAKER_01Um there's quite a few movies that get me sad. Um like you said, Richard Jules got me pretty sad. I don't know if I've ever teared up. Alright. Um uh radio. Damn, my boy's dropping radio, okay. Uh that was sad.
SPEAKER_00I saw that when I was younger. We are the same age, we're both, so yes. I feel like I have the same age. Um I have not seen it since childhood.
SPEAKER_01Me neither. Okay. Trying to think of elsewhere. There's other things that I'm trying to think, because like uh if I don't go back to them, right? I don't go back. Yeah, usually not. Yeah. Like um and not and not even like, oh I sad. Well, sometimes it is, because like Cyberpunk I don't want to watch again because it's so sad. I do want to, because it's so good. And to prep and to hype myself up for season two. But yeah, that's one of those times where it's like, yeah, it's just so sad for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I could see that, bro. Like that's yeah, I totally feel that way. And I'm trying to think too, like, I don't go back, like I could definitely tell you like the first movie that I remember where I watched this and I was just fucking crying, and I was like, what the fuck? But I but it was the terminal with Tom Hanks because I was like young. I remember literally I watched it with a cousin, and I was like, why are they so mean then? There was no fucking reason to Stanley Tucci. Anyways, okay, I'm gonna start on that movie. But uh you know what I'm talking about? Yeah, he's stuck in the airport because his country doesn't exist anymore. Oh my god, it's anyways, but I know okay. I guess a movie that doesn't make you cry. But like I also realize that too, right? Well, I mean, yeah, like let's be real, I'm also probably way more sensitive than you.
SPEAKER_01Honestly, yeah. Yeah, which is um but it's like also too like personality. Maybe maybe I'm like just because I'm not crying to these movies, like, I'm still like there's still some sadness. I it's not a lot of people. I'm trying to think, like, there's de I there's definitely been times where I've watched a movie and like I remember like I'll go to my like I'll tell my sister, like, oh yeah, I was watching this movie and I almost got tears, like I got I was getting teared by it. Yeah, or like my I felt like in my eyes like kind of like swelling up, like it was actually really affecting me. And so it's like I just can't I'm just trying to think like I just can't think of it right now. Um but there's definitely been a few, because I remember even telling her pretty recently, yeah, I used to think like I don't feel emotions in movies, but there's been a lot of times I've told you like this movie almost made me cry. And it's like when we laugh at a movie, that's an emotion, like kind of. Yeah. Yeah, you know, but yes. Well, I I just mean like just like obviously like sure I'm gonna have emotions, whether it be anger, happiness, sadness watching a movie, yeah, I'm gonna I'm going to feel these things while I'm watching it. But I'm just not going to be like, oh this movie is sadness to me. Okay. You know, I guess that's the best way I would that's the that's the best way I would describe something. That you just won't be able to do that. Like I I'm not just not that I won't attach any feelings, it's just like I'm not going to attach that movie as like, oh, like that's like Richard Jewel, oh, that's sadness to me.
SPEAKER_00I'm not saying that's a sad movie. Why do you have to say that's sadness to me? I've never said anything as a sadness to me. A whole feeling. I'm saying it made me feel this way when I watched it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess I guess I guess that's just how I'm kind of taking what you're telling me, I guess. But I don't know.
SPEAKER_00No, bro, I don't feel whole feeling. I'm like, this makes me sad when I'm watching a sad movie. But like, this doesn't mean sadness to me. Yeah. I don't have any I don't have any that make a whole pure feeling of emotion. Okay. Other than the joy of watching. Yeah. We totally haven't even talked about a specific movie in a while.
SPEAKER_01And we haven't talked about assassination of Jesse James or Robert Ford.
SPEAKER_00I know, bro. Okay, so then like I said, that was probably about 40 minutes of a break time, but I'll totally leave this in. That was a good that was good fucking topic wise. But so then we could jump in. Hang on, where's the battery at? Okay, good. Uh I mean fuck yeah, dude. The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. How do you even want to start that? So was that a special movie to you? Oh yes. Okay, in what sense now? And all of our qualifiers look special. And then it's just fucking great. Everything about it, everything about it.
SPEAKER_01No feelings attached. Uh I guess not. That's okay. I don't this movie doesn't give me feel good. Well I mean, like, there's sad, like, yeah, there's there's feelings I have for it. There's like when Jesse's gonna get killed, when uh Robert gets killed. Um there's there's humor, there's like embe I feel embarrassed watching some of the scenes. What's oh embarrassed? Hello. Dude, I you know I get problems. You know I get embarrassed. I've said I've even said it on here. I think secondhand embarrassments are so fucking easy, bro. And well, yeah, like um a lot of the times when they're making fun of Robert Ford and j and the way Robert Ford acts too.
SPEAKER_00Even where you see his comebacks where he's defending himself, he sounds so elegant.
SPEAKER_01Yes, like okay, so what I'm thinking of immediately is when they're going through his shit, like his Jesse James collection, and he's like, Oh, give me your give me your wallet, mister, or whatever. And then like Jesse uh uh Robert Ford steps up to him and he's like uh you cross me again, I'll put a bullet in your head. Yeah, right. And then like uh you step up to me, you better step up at me with a shooting iron. And it's just like there's he's trying to be tough. He's trying to be tough, and it's so fucking obvious. And even these guys are like uh Sam Rockwell's response is like, ooh, like so perfect, like they're just fucking clowning him, and it's like it's so embarrassing that this dude, like, he's he sees that they're making fun of him, but it's like he doesn't even know that he's not handling the situation right. Yeah. And that's that gives me embarrassment. Yeah. That's not the only thing that'll give me embarrassment, but it's like that scene in particular gives me really bad embarrassment. The same when he's talking to his brother uh in the beginning when uh Robert Ford's talking to talking to Frank, and he's like, uh, oh, like check my grit and courage or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Your sidekick in the book. I read that scene earlier today, and they were talking about like Frank James has only ever heard that reference in horses. He's never heard the term sidekick as the way we know it. Oh yeah, so that's why he's like, what the fuck do you mean? You want to be my horse? That's it.
SPEAKER_01And then there's a great line who's like, I don't know what it is about you, but every time I talk you give me the willies. He says that yeah, that would like some of the shit's right out of the book.
SPEAKER_00Like, dude, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's almost like it's based off the book. Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_00This is based off the book until you hand me that fucking book. I was like, oh fuck.
SPEAKER_01You know what's funny when I bought it, I was like, fuck, I hope he didn't buy it on his own because he got hype for it. But good thing you didn't know about it. No, bro, did not realize.
SPEAKER_00Because I bought two TVs. I bought myself one and I bought you one. Oh yeah, he did. He got me a book, guys. Uh-huh. That's the case anybody's ever done for me.
SPEAKER_01The happiest? That's my book. That's the most homosexual thing you've ever done. Close. Um yeah, so like, is it special to me for that? For that give you a no. It's special to me because to me, special is like just a movie I can watch and enjoy, and it sticks with me. Okay. And this movie does all and also too, like, in this movie is special in a special way, because it's everything about I've even talked to you, like, after you rewatched it, I was like, This is the fucking most beautiful movie of all, like, beautifully shot movie ever. Like every every single scene is a painting, bro. Like, like it could be a work of art on its own to me. Okay. From like even like G. The composition that these people are in, like the parts that they're in, this is so fucking peak, bro. Like to go excited, to go to green, and look at this. You hear what you're saying? Shots and okay, and I have something to say to that too, because that train sequence. Remember, I told you about the train, we have anything. And you're like, oh yeah, I remember the yeah, I remember rewatching it. Yes. Right. And so to me, that's such a great scene because as a person that doesn't care about that stuff necessarily, I just I watch the movie and I'm not thinking about that. Apparently, that camera trick makes every single person notice that. Because it's a still shot, the trains come in, it's that chugging along, it's a great sound. Yeah, that music is playing, it's awesome. And then it sort of like almost like what to me what it feels like is like the camera is on the fucking rails, yeah, and it clicks with it, it's on its own cart and it clicks with the train, and then the train's going along with it. And it's like, even if you don't even think of it as deeply as I'm thinking of it right now, you still are experiencing something, like that they did something different with that shot, and you're noticing it. Even without it mattering to the story, because it doesn't matter to the story. And that's to me, that's yeah, like to me, that's where you're all shit giving me earlier to hear you saying.
SPEAKER_00And I'm about to say that to you, that's why that's why I'm it's movie movies, and that's why you think it's special. This is a special movie that movies for you. Don't tell me why I think it's special. I know it is because you're telling me, I'm giving you back and forth.
SPEAKER_01It's literally about it's not moving. Well, it is moving because it movies, for sure. Yeah, but I just for me.
SPEAKER_00But even but I'm saying that you're saying how special because of stuff that is outside you're of the out the stuff you're looking inwards. But that's how good it was that it made you pay attention. Right. Which I I get and I love, bro. Yeah. It was filmed well, the the cinematographer actually, the director of photography, Roger Deakin, actually didn't. Didn't know Pitch Room. Yes, because he works with the Cohen brothers a lot. And he also talks about the train sequence is one of his most the most like he's proudest about it ever. Yeah, something like that.
SPEAKER_01And to me, that's not even my favorite shot of that train sequence. It's the shot, yeah, because they're wearing the white masks and they're it's that bright light, and they're following the train, and it's just it's fucking beautiful. It is. And then And the music. This guy has music. I love this soundtrack.
SPEAKER_00Who did the soundtrack?
SPEAKER_01I don't remember his name.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god. Nick Cave or some shit? Nick Cave, yeah. Nick Cave and Warren Alice got timed with that. Yeah. I'm not sure who Warren is, but I know Nick Cave from like the band from the 90s, I guess. Know him from this. Oh, okay. I uh honestly I know him because his opening he did the opening song for Petey Blinders.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00And then apparently that same song was used in the Scream movies back in the day. Because I was randomly watching Scream 7 with my mom and my grandma. Scream 7's not back in the day. I was watching that recently right now. Please let me finish there. And then because it's a movie that does a lot of callbacks to the earlier movies, I guess that movie, that song was in the early screen movies, because that song starts playing in the middle of screen seven, and I'm singing along to it. My mom's like, how do you know that that song? It's from the old movie. It's like from the original movie. I know it because of PG Blinders. It's like cool. That was a whole point. Screen 7 was very recent. Sorry to fucking cut you off, bro. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You haven't fucking done that to me, and I I took it. That's okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's a back and forth, but also because you were just like, you just sound like an idiot right now. That's why I'd stop being smoked. Screen 7 didn't come a long time ago. I didn't know what you're talking about. I didn't mean smoke. No. No, you're good, but I was making a point. I had a point about Nick Cave and the thing. I keep circling beacons because I should have got more of a list of what he fucking did. Because he's done He did Blade Runner too, didn't he?
SPEAKER_01Dude, I think so. I think he did Running Gosling and I don't know if he did the original one, but I know he did Blade Runner. Running Gosling. He did it. What is it, 2049?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right there. Because VL becomes after VA. Deacons is fucking peaked. And like you said, every fucking was filmed in Canada. It wasn't our American Midwest or whatever the fuck whatever Missouri is in the blue cuts. But it's just pure fucking. It's like you said, every those big shots because they're on their horses, just riding around the fucking mountain, everything in the background. It's the fucking landscape paintings, bro. It's all landscape paintings of America. Like in that sense, again, it's fucking oh god, it's beautiful. It's gorgeous, dude. I totally agree with you. Please continue about why you think this movie's so special, aside from the camera work. The feelings of embarrassment. The music.
SPEAKER_01I can't express enough how much I love this soundtrack.
SPEAKER_00It is so it's very surprising to me how much you love this soundtrack. I love it.
SPEAKER_01I was even because I listen to it at work as well. Oh, that's and I'll have it in my ear, sometimes I'll have it on speaker, and it's like there's a lot of like, I don't even know how to describe it, but like the strings are like these tension-building sounds, and then there's also just like the somber pianos while they're playing, or wh whatever I don't know. I think it's piano. But like there's the somber music as well to it, and it's just like it's so perfect for what this movie is. The narrator talking. The narrator He's such a great narrator. It's and it's so awesome because he's talking and it's it to me, it's like it's almost like it's like the greatest history channel documentary of all time. I can see that. And it's like because of that. Because of that type of thing. And that's why I draw the narrator?
SPEAKER_00Or that reminds me of like a history channel thing. Is it because he reminds me of Richard Addenbrough's voice from the nature documentaries? Probably.
SPEAKER_01Probably, but um But that guy's voice is but just like the fact that it's like it uh just look, yeah, just look at it as like, imagine if this was on the History Channel, this shit would be like the best thing on the History Channel, which would be true, I guess.
SPEAKER_00But because they also had that fucking again, that much production value, and they fucking the actors are acting in it. Um I forgot where exactly I was going. Why special to you?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I had something else about the narrator.
SPEAKER_00How great he is. He's just such a soothing voice that's also like you said, if he was a history channel guy, I would want to listen to whatever history channel he's giving. Because he just gives such it is benign fucking information where it's like, oh, he just thought about this that day. Or sometimes he's blinking like he can't handle the glory of God sometimes, you know. That's why I was just like, okay. Um like matter of fact. Yes. Not only that, okay, so reading the book, that motherfucker whack is poetic, like a motherfucker. Like he is just similes left and right, he is using his language for descriptors. It's also like he's talking like the way they talk in the movie. You know, like a little old timey, they'll use a couple more words like, oh, I have an improper constitution right now. Like, my stomach hurts. That's you know, instead of saying that right now, like, or I'm trying to think of other just little tint.
SPEAKER_01Or even like um when Jesse's talking to Robert in the beginning, he's like, uh, I don't care who comes with me. Never have. That's why they send the Gregory. Fucking poetry, right? Yeah, the dialogue in this is fucking poetry. So far, right out of the box. Poetry don't work on wars.
SPEAKER_00That's fucking poetry. I haven't seen that yet in the book yet, but you're right. Poetry don't work on actually they kind of skipped that. That was just straight from the movie, like them shooting the shit around the like in the I haven't read the book, by the way. Okay. I mean you said you're not going doing dynamics. Well, you can't you have Dune and Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones and Dune. In that order. Yes, you are! Didn't you even start Dune before Game of Thrones? No, you start Game of Thrones before you. Jesus Christ, didn't you start Game of Thrones when I was working for a team? Perhaps. Okay. At least that was one book down, right? I read a whole last book. You did. Before you did this audiobook companion audio, which I think do what you gotta do, my brother. Do what you gotta do. Because I want to be able to talk to you about those books and doom before you watch Doom the Two.
SPEAKER_01I'm that's definitely not happening.
unknownFuck.
SPEAKER_00It's July, it's not even September yet. I'm not reading all these books, bro. You just gotta read. Oh, just it's Dune 1 and 2. You never read. You never finished Dune 1 the book. I've got like 70 pages in. I think about like 70 pages left.
SPEAKER_01I was like, yo. Because I was reading it, and then you were reading it, and you got way ahead of me, and I was like, we're not fucking you do that then, bro. I'm no, I got read two!
SPEAKER_00God damn it.
SPEAKER_01I already read that. That was before me. I got into Game of Thrones because of Elden Ring.
unknownElden Ring.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Because of just George R being a part of it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But anyways, back to Assassin's Legion. So by the coward Robert Ford. Um, so the narrator, even something like that, the music, the casting. Casting is peaking. Outside of just their talent, like which shines, just the fact that the kids are playing unique. Yeah, and everybody. Sam Rockwell, Zoe De Chanel's in it, which is in the end. Mary Louise Parker. Mary Louise Parker's in it. I love that. Um I didn't realize, dude. And and those two are like hardly even. They're probably the only one? Yeah. Yeah. Besides like the little girl, yeah. Little like uh oh uh Jesse's sister has a couple lines. No, I don't remember Jesse. Um not Jesse. Yeah. The Ford sister. Um then the the the wife of the uncle um that Dick Little sleeps with, I guess. That's right, that's right. No, that's his dad. That's his stepmom, remember. That's Jeremy Renner's stepmom. Well, it's Jesse James's uncle. That's true. That's Stephan. Yeah. So yeah. But um Oh my god. And but it but then to that, like, they're all their performances are so awesome. So I love movies, yes. And even Brad Pitt as Jesse James. He's scary as fuck, but it's also too like what a fucking great casting to have Brad Pitt, who is he's not like Jesse James, obviously, but like he is he is a fucking icon in it in himself, and so at that point already. Yeah. Yeah. And so and he plays it really well. I used to just think Casey Affleck was just like so fucking great, okay. Which he is, but also He does like he he it doesn't take away from how great Rat Brad Pitt is. Not that. I think Rad Pitt is awesome in this movie too.
SPEAKER_00It's like if you're just looking at his own performance, like we said, scary, he's just so menacing. And then it's not only menacing, but it's how I'm trying to think of another example, but just like, especially towards the end where how by then he's suspicious of them. Oh, yeah. How suspicious he is, and it's just how he how especially that last scene where he's fucking with him, and he's like, Oh, come here real quick, sit right here, and then he puts fucking bob goes right between his legs and knife, yeah. And he's like, Oh, what are you gonna do? What are you gonna do? Like, and then he just starts laughing and he's like, ah, it's so like projected and forced almost.
SPEAKER_01And it's awkward, it's just an awkward mind.
SPEAKER_00No, I think he was just crazy and he believed, or he was just like, oh, this is fun to fuck with him like this. Like he I don't know, like, but I was saying like he was just that menacing and you're scared because he's almost jokerish to me. I keep saying that when they do because I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_01I don't think I've heard you say that about his joker.
SPEAKER_00No, not about this, but just um because I think I called Jason O'Malley the Joker and then and then then ambulance to an ambulance. Oh, that's right.
SPEAKER_01I love it. That's uh okay, when you did say that, that does make me kind of want to watch it. Because I love J. J. Mall.
SPEAKER_00I love Jamal. Oh, okay, you should. Okay, so like, yeah, ambulance. I wouldn't even call it special to me, just right now it's exciting and I will not. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean not every movie's gonna be special. I want you don't have to watch only special movies. I recommend only special movies, I feel like, but it's true. And I recommend a little bit of everything. You do? I try to watch some stuff.
SPEAKER_00You did, like, I was surprised you saw Wrath of Man. Like if I had to choose getting you to watch Master and Commander or Wrath of Man, Master and Commander, because like I said, that one movie's so I I think I like Master and Commander more than Wrath of Man.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, because I could see myself rewatching Master and Commander just because, like, I don't know, like, I didn't fully embrace it as much as I wanted to. Like I feel like I I feel like I can watch it and get something else out of it. I feel like if I watch Wrath of Man, I'm not getting anything else out of it. Exactly. Just be besides the fact of like, oh okay, I remember this scene now. Yeah. Outside of just like refreshing my memory.
SPEAKER_00I will say this, really, for Wrath of Man though. I guess I walked away at one point in the scene. So like the big reveal about how he's involved in the thing. Like I missed, or like, or not even the big reveal, but the big reveal that he's like a crime, or like he's a he's a n he's a bad guy himself, you know. Everybody else calls a boss. Like I missed, like, I guess I just missed like couple minutes where Where it reveals it, where it shows it, or No, I I uh it's uh it's after the first when he shoots Post Malone, you know how Post Malone fucking robs him one time? Oh and then he just kills everybody, fucking kills Post Malone. After that, after that heist attempt, the FBI comes into the armored car company, they talk to him, and then after that, those FBI agents go talk to Andy Garcia, and they were like, Why are we just pretending like this giant fucking evil guy who's here is just here? Like, why are we not arresting that fucking guy? That guy's like on our top ten most wanted list. Like, what the fuck? Like, I missed that entirely the first time around. So, like, like, and so like the me watching the movie, I was just like, who the fuck is this guy? What's going on? And then just like, and then so finally, like, when upon re-watching the second time, like, that's the only time I took something extra because I just didn't see it. But like, that to say is I was gonna say, you know, like I don't have to watch it again, but I had that movie on as background noise mostly. So it that was a different kind of not only to say that this word, but just that one was just entertaining as funny.
SPEAKER_01You can use special however you want. I use it however I want. That's true. So it is pretty special the way you yeah. And to be fair, like, I mean, yeah, if I watch, and not that I'm saying like I won't get anything out of it at all, I'm sure I could, yeah. But I just like I don't see myself wanting to do that. Exactly versus like with Master Commander, I actually would want to re-watch. Like I said, I want to watch a release I would I can kind of maybe even ask you some questions just to kind of further expand on it for me. We'll fucking do it, dog.
SPEAKER_00But that's why we're not talking about it right now. We're talking about this as an indigenous game, but like how Robert Ford. Yeah, yeah. Uh I will also say, so like, how menacing oh yeah, back to how Brad Pitt's good acting in this doesn't take away from case. Uh it does not at all. Because also a lot of his menacing scene is when he's not even in the room with uh young Bob Ford, other than when he's fucking with Oh my god. But like that whole what he does with Garrett Headland. We didn't even talk about Garrett Headlin? Delahund Delahunt. Damn, I keep calling Headlin. There is another man that exists is called Garrett Headland. Okay, yeah. Yeah, okay, right? Okay, but Garrett Delahunt is in this movie.
SPEAKER_01And he's also too, dude. There's there's a part where um at the train robbery scene where he stops Jesse from killing people. And there's even um within that scene where he's like, you better pray, because I'm gonna kill you. There's a it it's a cut, it's a cut to um Garrett. Garrett Dillahunt. Garrett Headley. Um Garrett Dillahunt. And there's like, you can see too, like, or maybe I'm just imagining it and just projecting it to myself, but like you can see like like he's breathing a little heavy and he's looking back, like he's nervous. And it's like, I don't know why necessarily he doesn't want him to be killed so badly. I d I I don't necessarily think it's important, I guess, but he doesn't want him to do killed. So then he goes, uh, don't shoot him. And then he goes, Don't tell me what I can, I cannot do it. And it's just like just it's just like a great delivery, it's a great line itself, it's great dialogue, even just his performance, his his delivery of the line is just so great.
SPEAKER_00Even right before that where he says they got them company ways and I got my mean streak. That's how we get it done. Like on the street. He didn't have to bop him, Charlie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you did. Yep, yeah. There's also too a little part in that too where he's uh he he's like bashing the lock, right? And then he's like asking him, is like, is there anything good in here? And he's like, and then that the reg uh whatever that train guy is, he's like, could be. And then he kind of like he stops and he's like and like you hear the wood or whatever breaking and cracking, it's a really good sound. And then he pulls out his gun and he just goes, open that safe. His voice is a little fucking deeper. Yeah. And it's just like, oh, I love it. There's also too a little bit where I think it's I think it's after he bops him on the head and he's like down.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Brad Pitt's trying to put his bandana on his nose and he fumbles it a couple times. He fumbles it like three times. Which is I'm I'm sure it's not intentional, I'm sure it's just a mistake on it. Yeah, it's something I always fucking noticed that I don't know why it stands out to me. I can't even picture that right now. He does like he does it like once, twice, and then gets it on like a third try. Like he's trying to lift his face? Yeah, he's no, he's trying to get his bandana up because it's like falling down a little. And it's not important to the story, I'm not saying like, oh, it's not saying it's just something I've noticed. Yeah, and I've for people listening. Like the whole reason I'm bringing this up is just like how ingrained this movie is into me. I love that, yes. And it's like even little things like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I love it. See, I gotta, gosh, I gotta watch more special movies that are special to me then, bro.
SPEAKER_01And then even like we're I I don't care if we're jumping ahead.
SPEAKER_00I I Oh, you don't care about jumping ahead now. Because it's not no control men. Like I have I've got no, he sounds very excited about this one somehow. He sounds more excited than we've for No Country, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, because I wanted to be serious with No Country.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01I want I took that very seriously. I'm not taking this one very serious. I just want to talk about it. I just want to discuss this movie. Good. No control men, I've always had thoughts about it and I've always wanted to express myself about that. Versus this, it's just like, I don't know, it's a little different. It's different the way I want to do this. Okay. I love it. So I forgot where I was jumping ahead, but okay, where we're jumping ahead. We were about Jesse. I don't remember, but okay. I'm sure it'll come to me eventually, but okay.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna um just to help us in here, I'm gonna tell you one of the other things I uh wrote down here. Oh, also just about oh god, I think he texted me. Uh or I texted it is about uh well, just uh Robert Ford's intentions. Was he he was genuinely a fucking fanboy all the way up until the game?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay, yeah, so genuinely illegal stuff, right? Yeah. How like is that accurate is what I was thinking. Because it goes back to that, like, oh I look I look at this as like just god I look at this as like actual gospel. Like this is what actually happened. You know what I mean? Because I fucking love this movie so much. Yeah. In the same sense, like I watched the Zodiac over and over and over again thinking I can solve the case that way, just because I fucking love that movie. I love that. And it's like this way so to look back on it and think like, oh, it's was it like a statement on celebrity culture and worship at the time? I don't know. That's what I'm asking. That's why I asked that. Wait, what was though? What was Assassination's just I'm not talking about Zodiac no more.
SPEAKER_00I'm talking about assassination. But what no, what about assassination? What do you mean was it?
SPEAKER_01So Robert Full Robert Ford being obsessed with uh Jesse James.
SPEAKER_00I feel like that. No, that now what it's become is even more crazy, bro.
SPEAKER_01Like at 08, in 08 or 05, 07, whatever. When it came out, was it a statement on where where pop culture and where celebrity worship or just celebrity interest was going? I don't know. Maybe.
SPEAKER_00But anyways, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01But like we can view it now and I I see it that way, which is why I asked that question. I was like, is that even like a real thing? Was it a real thing? Was that actually just because it's written in the book? I don't know. That's true.
SPEAKER_00This guy like the the book is all hyped as it's just like, oh, this is he took a little low history and he made it high art. So I think it's some fictionalized shit. So it's like but maybe I'm hoping during the reading of it they'll say, because I don't even know where this motherfucker's sources are from or what they are, but it's just like we're just led to infer, at least in the first half, I for sure think he's a mega fanboy. He's way too into it. Yeah, he's into them. And that's why there is a line though that Jesse has, and I wrote this in, it's already 34 minutes into that movie he asked us. And I'm just like, we still have two hours left. I got you. You wanna be me? Yeah. Do you like me or you wanna be me? And then I'm just like, well, Jesse already figured it out right in the fucking band, does he? Was he a little gay for him, also? That was almost two worship. I know you, yeah, you don't want to hear that, but I was like, dude, the way Casey Affley acts and how awkward he is. Ewish, everybody, bro. That's fine. That's fine. I don't think it's not even about shipping.
SPEAKER_01Don't ship him, okay? Because he's married to the weeds lady. And I wonder if Brad Pitt or Jesse James would be attracted to or the other one around.
SPEAKER_00Maybe he loves him too much. That's probably what, yeah, he wants to be me or be in me. That's asking him, bro. No, that's a thing. They didn't think like this in the 1800s, but he would have thought about it if he knew about the context. But that's like that's kind of what he wanted to add. Like, that's too much. You want to be in me is insane. Like, I'm telling like just watching it, pure watching it right now, first time forever, I'm like. And again, I think it's possible. That's also what I was telling you too, is like, I don't buy Casey Athletic as 19 years old, where he's supposed to be in this. But I do buy him as being so awkward and weird. Like, he is so awkward and weird that in a whole in a different movie, they could have they could have maybe played that. Like, I don't know. Like if you wanted to talk about fucking propaganda putting out or whatever, I don't know. But he or if that was the historical thing. I'm not saying propaganda.
SPEAKER_01No, I just mean like as it is it was it a statement on where it's where celebrity culture and like pop culture and the worship. quote unquote worship of like these celebrities at that time was 1800 or 2008 no no in 2008 when the movie was came out yeah or I guess when the book was written maybe like it was it just uh like was it like an insight this guy had making this movie writing this book I don't think it was my guy could be teaches at Santa Clara University but you're right I don't know what he teaches but I think it's fucking here's another book he written Hitler's niece Marriott and ecstasy desperados and isn't it romantic I think this guy's more uh um historical fiction guy but hang on I wanted to check what are we checking when it came out uh wow you want to know this book was originally published 1983 oh wow this book is old then 1983 is older so then I don't know because in the 80s you could also say maybe people are moving celebrity that's what I'm saying like whenever the book was written whenever this TV show or the movie was made talking about it now it's just you can always I mean that's what I'm saying like now in 2026 you can put you can see a mirror of like our society with this obsession with a celebrity do you see that or I'm not saying you do it in the same I didn't I didn't people that are like that for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah there are and so that's what I'm saying when it was written was that I don't think that I don't think so bro that's all well you make those what is it well tell me I don't know if it wasn't I don't know I'm not the guy I'm just saying I'm just asking that question I don't even want an answer I'm just asking that question I thought you want an answer alright well then we don't know yeah but I'm just saying that's a question that popped up in my head interesting and that and why I don't think it's a question I think it's a statement that you want to make well did they this was about celebrity culture because like on the other hand like Zodiac is another good thing like that because that started the whole true true fucking crime wave before they even got into it because it's about that kind of obsession with it.
SPEAKER_01To be fair I think like um in 1980s when it was written like there's absolutely been people there were people who were obsessed with obsessed people who were obsessed with criminals bro the women killers get you know like fangirls get other right when they're in jail or when they're in court like they get women standing outside of mirrors got fucking married I think Ted Bunny and Rich Ramirez I think had people too and he like explicitly killed and attacked women. Right? So it's like there's been a there's there's proof yeah there yeah a fascination I guess of well outlaws because Disney is an outlaw and then also there's a celebrity. And then to get back to the movie there's a part where he's smoking a cigar with them and he says like uh I think that's when he says you want to be like me or anything no okay uh that's a little that's a little later. Okay um because he can't smoke the cigar right because he's a little bit yeah he's like if it makes you bungee or whatever like Mingy Bungie Bungie I think uh you don't have to smoke it but uh he's saying um oh man I used to have your nicknel and dime books and and then he's smoking a cigar or a cigar and he goes they're all lies you know yeah and then he goes like he looks disappointing he's like of course of course yeah but that's again that's I think that ties into how you're his obsession with the with his celebrity well but also his awkwardness about he's just yeah he's just like I don't wanna I don't want him to know how much I really like these like I haven't like he was trying to tell him I haven't because he wanted to be up to him he's like those are lies oh yeah I know those are lies like he's just he's embarrassing himself he's very embarrassed by him he's like oh yeah I knew there were lies but then you can also tell he is hurt to find out yeah about this slavery are not true.
SPEAKER_00And and I think that's that was part of slowly why he maybe started turning on him.
SPEAKER_01Because even I don't know there was a turn so even before then even when he's actually first talking about when he's first talking to Jesse's like you have a chance to wish you happy birthday and he's like how'd you know? Yeah even that's kind of we weird that is very fucking and so he's like and then his response was you'd be surprised what I have stored away. Yeah and then j and just that whole idea of like the discussion they have where it's like oh I don't have the fucking internet you couldn't Google this shit. Yeah but like just the fact of like oh I don't need to harp on a subject and then he cuts him off he's like I don't care who comes with me. Yeah it don't matter. He sees him for what he is already right like uh Jesse James and so to go later on when he's smoking the cigar with him is like um he's smoking this cigar and he's just got kind of giving him he's looking to his side he's just looking at him studying he's like he knows exactly I'm talking about Jesse James. Yes he's looking at him and he already sees it. He already knows what he's gonna do.
SPEAKER_00You think he knows he's gonna kill him?
SPEAKER_01No not kill him but well okay I'm sorry I didn't explain he knows this kid he's already obsessed with him yes in a way in a sponsor maybe not very early like there's like there's like this sort of idolization of him to an extent maybe he can't know how crazy it is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah but even by then it's but he can see it he can see something well even his brother said it in the first meetup the more you talk the more you can go with it Willy spot 100% Jesse knows and so there's there's just great little bits like him him he can tell that the that the cigar's given him and he can make him uncomfortable. He's just trying to smoke a cigar because he wants to hang out with with him you know like shit like that.
SPEAKER_01And then even to like his awkwardness there's a part where Jesse asks him how old he is and he's like I'm 20 except see I won't be 20 till um until in January so and then he puts on that puts his hat back on I'm 19. Yeah and kind of like a little more like proud of itself like trying to be more confident I guess. To me that's how I took it. Okay. But and then him he's like oh what do what do I have here? Oh that's right because he has like a pamphlet to uh or like an article about the Jess about the James brothers like oh I I I wasn't sure if I would be able to tell you two apart and then he's like you want me to read it and he goes and then he just kind of gives him the okay and he's talking about how handsome he is yeah and he's reading it and then he and then he's kind of like stuttering or or he's just like bumbling around a along and then uh Jesse goes like alright alright alright. Yeah he's like that's not he goes yeah yeah you don't have to hear about it or whatever he's because he's fucking sound going on yeah he's really into it and then two when he's um I guess with after the robbery there's his the Jeremy Renner which is with his Jesse's cousin there's Sam Rockwell uh Woodheight which is and then there's Sam Rockwell is Charlie Ford uh Casey Edward's brother yeah and there's Dick Little who's just another guy who is played by Paul Schneider I'm not sure if he's related to Roy Schneider or Rob Schneider.
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure which Snyders are one of the Jaws guys. Oh okay the show his name is Dick Little I know his name is Dick Little with two D's with two D's with two D's that little dick's got double D's thank you I was thinking about that at the moment they said that uh oh wait what were you gonna say about that? Are you gonna talk about how he's telling how Jesse told him to tell them to go home and he can stay more why do you get to stay on his cousin?
SPEAKER_01Yeah and so even too there's like a bit of a a jealousy amongst amongst all the other people where it's like and then he even goes like how come is Bob that gets to stay you know like they're they're all they all want to be next to this guy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So there's that too yes carriage. Casey is amazing. I did say he is I will not let it go that he is 28 playing 19 but I think it just plays into how the extra awkwardness of how good he was and he is again he does have a baby face so it helps if he is young enough and he's just so goddamn is it also too partly just because you know who he is like you actually know this time no rewatching this time I was like he's not fucking 19 like I'm sorry yeah it's just me watching it at this point like he's not 19 but again he just did such he does do a great fucking job of so even when like his voice cracks I don't like he does that really good too like it's he is still he's still soft spoken because like his fucking his Oppenheim role his voice those sounds the same but he's not stuttering in that one like he's scary in that one same soft voice yeah he's the Jesse in that movie dog and uh but no but just I don't know like Casey does so good at just being a little brother being that little follower kid that just follow like and then to me also when he turns like in indignant where he's mad at Jesse or like like another good scene I feel like is when it's just after they killed Jeremy Renner and Jesse's cousin Jesse fucking shows up at the house and then like they're he he Bob Bob's kinda feeling like I don't know if he's nervous he's just like Bob is being different because his dead cousin's like outside you know so it's like and Jesse's kind of picking up on it and Jesse's kind of giving him shit about it and Bob was like sorry to be shit like I'm just I'm upset because you beat up my little cousin you know like he had he had a comeback which I didn't think like I was like what the fuck is he so you can say how sorry you are for beating our little cousin he had a snappy comeback and I was like okay like your your your hostility's changing here a little bit even though you're still your awkward self like there is actual hostility here towards Jesse and it's like where was that is that from I don't like it's also part I think it's partly too that like realization that he isn't what he thought he was he isn't the Nickel Dunn button he's not yeah they ain't so he's got a mean streak which we also know and he really did kind of beat up his little cousin yeah that whole part too like where's Jim where's Jim Where's Jim Where's Jim like because I don't know Brad Pitt's kind of got like a weird accent like in general when he's yelling I noticed when he's emotional where it seems like his mouth is full of stuff. It's the only way I could describe it. And I thought where's Jim where's Jim it comes out a lot in that part to me and I'm I don't know like I don't know what it is but I hear it sometimes when he does stuff. Um I'm trying to think of another fucking example but I fucking can't right now but it's I think it's mostly when he's yelling not that he fucking yelled a lot but it's definitely where's Jim where's Jim like he's I don't know it's more weird. But he like you've just heard that inflection in his voice before in other meetings out before and he's on and he's supposed to be playing this particular time yes not even has to do with that time rack it's just the way his voice actually sounds when he yells that's it's just the whole thing just his like his vocal cords in the box no I think that's probably another time when it comes out it's like well I mean that's what else that's well I'm saying like he yelled no I know yeah I mean it's also maybe not yelling just but just emotional in his voices or whatever. I don't know it's a thing I hear when he comes out where I'm like where are you from? Like I think he's from California or no he's from something I don't know if I can Google it I won't Google it yet we'll hold on to that information. But uh was I feel like Sam Rockwell was okay even like I feel like Sam Rockwell was dumb and it's like we just think he's gonna be dumb until towards the end. Once it okay I also feel like this whole movie there's this whole beginning well the train robbery part bam bam bam and then Jesse clearing house once he kills Gary Dellahunt uh and then like the big little wood height side stuff and then it's like after all that shit happens and then it's like then the movie kind of becomes just like about the brothers and Jesse. You know? And then it's especially also oh okay that's also well no that's when sound Mark well changed. Sorry I remember now. Because Jesse came over in the middle of the night and he's like well I came over to ask you all questions he wants to go with me and I guess it's gonna be Charlie because Bob's being a little bitch kinda you know which in a way is teasing because everybody knows how upset yeah how much Bob would really want to go with him any other night except for the night you killed your cousin bro I would love to have gone on this fucking journey with you. And but like during that part I feel like is when Sam Rock bro really starts to shine more where he has to be he's so dumb he kind of gets away with it and he kind of avoids suspicion but he doesn't get shot like Ed Miller does you know like Gary Young you know like he's Jesse's kind of just like maybe he's just stupid enough. And then bro just the ongoing thing about how people just show up at your house like to like the like Charlie and Bob's sister how she just lives there and the gang comes sometimes. She rents out rooms yeah she's like fuck it okay and then like even just fucking Jesse's wife how he she's all like hi honey and then he's oh I guess we'll have two cousins staying with us you know like she's just like oh fuck it these guys or and I like how she does not fuck with Bob like she she seems cool with Charlie because she's like oh Bob like fuck you. You know why? Because she knows he wants to fuck her man. But anyways but yes she's just still anti him because she also might know well she just know he's a little weirdo. She's like what the fuck does this guy want to because I also think it also ties into that story Jesse gives where he talks about the other that's the other part where he pisses off uh Casey Asleck. It's the same dinner scene after they kill his cousin where he's like you know what you remind me of the one guy who uh pretended like he knew everything about me just to try and kill me because I killed his nephew or his brother or whatever that guy. Um there's that whole story he gives and then it's like maybe the wife was already like she knew about that story too so maybe she was like I don't know who the fuck the little twerp is who just upset with my husband. Yeah. But yes. And then it ties into fucking Mary Louise Parker bro I love her too even though she's barely in this like Zoe and her I fucking I love their code.
SPEAKER_01I I didn't even Parker you like that much or is it just because you recognize her?
SPEAKER_00Just because I recognize her because I was not expecting that and I was just like yeah right then just cast a stack. Yeah like I watched Weeds I watched like a couple seasons of Weeds like maybe two or three um have you ever watched that show?
SPEAKER_01Um I think so I think I've s I think like uh some like remember a brother and my mom would watch it and I would watch it with them sometimes maybe but I wouldn't fall I didn't follow it at all I watched it years after like when it was on Netflix I finished two to three seasons and I was like I don't I'm I'm already over this but I was just like recognize I love it uh and uh but the Zoe I do like a lot because 500 days of summer was so it was a special movie back in the day.
SPEAKER_00I rewatched it pretty recently I was like this is cringy as fuck I couldn't even finish it bro like I yeah it was uh yeah like yeah like it was she's an elf she is an elf I love her from elf as well bro I I love when she was blonde she's blonde an elf bro she's not even her normal self and then I kind of finally watched New Girl in recent years so they gave me a whole other appreciation of her but I definitely liked her because of Elf and what did I say right before that oh my god Five Her Days? Yes 500 days a summer and then I also I don't know if you know this but she's um a singer with an actual little band. Oh no uh yes I believe it's called his and hers. I'm not sure I it's I think it's one of those things either she like I think it's her husband who's her band mate or it's just some guy who's works well with her I guess. But it's it was just it's like a two-person thing and like a little bolty and I can imagine her with like well you heard her singing I don't think you know stuff like that. And uh but it's like it's not like I became obsessed with that group either but she's like I also I like two different songs on the playlist for throughout high school so it's like okay I knew her and uh but yeah dude like her showing up like really I honestly thought she was in it more uh more than I remembered. Like I was like oh what the fuck she's already gone like she's in here dancing with her feathers like let's go we're about to see some Zoe boobs like what is this why my guy was telling me it's peak like we're about to see two peaks right now but no and I was like you know what I'm also glad that we didn't see her poops because like you know what very tasteful of you Zoe D.
SPEAKER_01Like she doesn't do she doesn't do anything crazy over the sexual and she's still like to the story she's like an important piece for Bob a huge important person he talks to yeah about you and how he wanted how he expected an applause and then there's that quote of like I was only 20 years old I didn't I didn't see I didn't I didn't know I didn't see the world or whatever. Something like that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I didn't get it I was only 20 years old and it's like which again so that line also makes you think what okay well no I guess not really because I don't ever think he from the very beginning I don't think his intention is to kill Jesse. To be society like him possibly with him in his game God Yeah yeah he's not together he's married to act like that I mean Daisy was trying to uh and so and then at some point it does change and he does want to kill him I guess he wants the that applause he thought he was gonna have that's like but some like I don't know like when I hear that line he's like I don't know I thought I have applause like that sounds more like he was thinking about it for a long time to kill him like to me a little bit or maybe or maybe just because he's been thinking about it now years later but like that's why I'm like when did he stop going from obsessed idol to well I guess like we said he realized he wasn't the nickel and dime books. He realized he did have a meeting and then he does go with um he meets with like the what the governor? Yo that whole okay hang on before we get to like Okay yeah yeah I want to get to say what you want to say before we get to that yeah but uh but just how I think is also like I feel like uh the Fords kinda they took sides and that's where it turned against Jesse the whole once Dick Little killed his cousin thing.
SPEAKER_01Well technically he didn't kill him Bob killed his cousin because he was assaulting Dick Little who I guess he was friendly enough with Yeah like that's I feel like that was like just another inciting incident that caused our maybe there's something to it that the um Wood Height just he was like disrespectful to Jez uh to Robert so maybe that's why Robert was willing heart of it yeah maybe that's why Robert was willing to like actually in a way defend Dick Little to kill Wood Height just because like fucking I also just feel like I don't know you're right maybe just because uh because it was also Wood Wood Height and his brother they're the ones that went through his box right Wood Height and Robert's brother yeah they're the ones through his box yeah and so there's also two I wanted to talk about because in earlier in the movie um Dick Little hits him up while he's bathing and he's asking oh I he I heard Jesse had you stay later yeah he's like what'd you guys talk about he's like oh I don't think I can say he's like did he say that me and G and Jim Cummings were in cahoots? Yeah. So it's like he to me it's like okay like Dick Little doesn't know that he's the only one that doesn't know that uh Robert Ford is obsessed with Jesse because the other two know that he's obsessed with Jesse. Yeah so if he he had to have not known because like why the fuck would you be like hey me and this guy are in cahoots against Jesse you're fucking idle. He he had to have not known. Right? Yeah I forgot about that scene.
SPEAKER_00So it's kinda like Because I also what made him is that all that he was telling that's all why he threw the gun on him?
SPEAKER_01He wanted to yeah because he wanted to know what happened like why like was it about this? Was it about me? And then yeah it's like he's like give me that give me that uh so fucking that's when he's so stupid he's definitely so he's just like scrubbing his feet like oh here leave me alone I'm busy kind of type type type of vibe. Dick little big dick ever being such a scrappy thing for a small squirrel or something like this is that what you can't hear to see.
SPEAKER_00Or is it just Monstie Monsters I'm not even gonna include it's fine I I get it and I shouldn't be so teasy about it but I was just like a whole other a whole other layer I got from his performance this time around um you you mentioned it a little bit this is just what you do because you did this with Master and Commander.
SPEAKER_01You just make shit gay.
SPEAKER_00That's just what you do bro to be fair Master Commander that was pointed out to me by the blank check guys because the other guy was just like they're in marriage at sea and this is them fucking without fucking when they play Instagram I can't take the credit for that I just put that shit out there. But uh but uh taking it away I I could see how they also had a good partnership Master and Commander. They had a genuine fucking partnership that was legit. But it's not like actually like uh like a like I don't know this these weren't real people I don't know no those guys weren't real but they're basically the Lord Nelson guy was real. He's the only real one out of um but like this particular story didn't necessarily happen at all right like these guys there's no HMS surprise I think this guy then go ahead fucking shit about here this guy but if they were real they're just real people if you want to but if that's it makes you if that's what you go to then hey is Robert Ford real? Is Jesse James real? You mean Jesse James Central success one right? That's what you mean? Yeah the fucking biker guy Robert Ford the car guy right like the first time I heard this movie like a long time ago preteen like you're going with it I was just like wait is that the Ford guy did the fork guy kills the like I didn't think it was Jesse's biker at all I didn't think I did not think of it like I knew Jesse was an outlaw and I was like was that like how old is the Ford guy? Like when they said Robert Ford I was just like I like the guy maybe I didn't mean the car the fucking I legit I legit was just like so like for a while there I did think the car guy had somebody too like he's definitely somebody he was a coward but I guess he found a good way to get around. Uh but do we know? Is there any I don't even know. Never mind. How how common is Ford? Is there any connection to the Ford dynasty with the Ford? Oh no. Right? Like he had brothers. Alright. He had a a sister. She could have kids. Not that they'd all be named Ford. Yes. Uh I don't know. But yes, for a little while there, I did think Robert, the founder of the Ford Mode Company. He didn't have the crazy past before he made cars, basically.
SPEAKER_01He was a coward. He was for a while, yeah. That's what I thought.
SPEAKER_00He was scared of horses. And that's why he made the horses scared. Let's get that. I'm proud of that. Okay. Now we got a crazy side tangent, but just how Sam Rockwell was goaded when he was just going around with Jesse. Mm-hmm. Or oh, dude, when he woke him up in the middle of the night. And he was just like, like when Jesse woke him up trying to him. He told him about how he killed Ed Miller. He's like, okay, I told you a story, you guys do it for me. And he's like, I'm just so tired, I wanna go to bed. I got nothing for you. That's why he's nervous still, but it's like he's so dumb.
SPEAKER_01There's even a part too where it's like later on where it's just j it's just uh the brothers and Charlie. And then in the field, right? Not just that too, but there's a part where he I think I think it's Samarock Wells, so Charlie, he's like laying in bed and he's like crying because he's like, he's gonna kill us. Yeah. And then and then Robert's like, chal like chill, bro, calm down. But then to back to the to the field, there's that part where they're like talking about just like how paranoid he is, and then Jesse's like, you know, from now on, I forget how you're gonna be able to do it. Yeah. Yeah, don't go. From now on, you check with me or something like that.
SPEAKER_00Before you go to the rat? Yeah, that one you went to. Oh, okay. So then that was the whole other thing I wanted to know. Uh, because Dick Little gets shot in the leg, he's holed up at his sister's house. So little Bob Ford decides to turn him in to start this whole process? Or was he already working with Dick Little at that time? Because remember, to turn themselves in, because this is before he gets like working our way up to the governor office. Which also the main cop is Don Johnson, who's go or not Don Johnson, the cop from Kill Bill that says, why else on number one? Well, we have here. Wait, who? Okay. There were like two kind of main cops that are in charge of that poxy that come to the sister's house. They arrest the two kind of main guys. Uh one of them was from Heat and Sons of the Lamps. He's fucking Buffalo Bill, tucks his dick in, like, would you fuck me? I'd fuck me, I'd fuck you real hard. He's one of the fucking cops in the movie, bro. I love that. And he's also a cop in Heat again. Yeah, he's just dope. Now the other cop, the older looking guy, I don't remember. He's not Don Johnson, I was wrong. He is from Kill Bill. But you don't remember Kill Bill. Fuck that's right. Fuck! Okay, never mind. Well he's from Kill Bill volume 2, specifically. Playing another little Texas cher's idea. But anyway, I was just like, look at these guys, they're cops in the 1800s. So even the cops were stat cats, is all I'm getting. You're right about how you can't.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like just like small characters like that.
SPEAKER_00Just small that are fucking amazing. Yeah. And then uh because like we said, even Jeremy Renner is fucking he is so young in this. It launches his singing career. I told you, because they got his singing Confederate song in the beginning, and he's just I was like, oh shit, that's where he sang. That's where he learned the sing. He knew he had a gift. Um and then Oh god, what was I going with that? Yes, okay. So, like, the way the cops come to the house to arrest Nick Little, you know. Was he in on that, or did Bob Ford just set his ass up and once he was in prison, or like once he was set up, he was like, hey, let's work with the cops to take out Jesse.
SPEAKER_01See, that's what I told you when I texted you, like, this story doesn't do a good job in explaining itself because of that type of shit right there, where it's like, that's I don't know. Like you can I'm sure you can infer, but it's like I don't I just don't like there are a lot of times where I feel like it's like, why is this happening here? Like what's what part like that? What happened?
SPEAKER_00What's another part like that? That's the only thing I can think about is just was Dick Little in on that initial raid of everybody coming in?
SPEAKER_01That part, and then a little later too, where where Dick Little is with Robert Ford and he's like and he's like and they're interviewing the mayor or they're interrupting another, and then like Bob's Bob is like pretend like he walks up to him and like waves his hand and then the fucking bob or whatever. It's just like I don't understand like the narrator because of how crazy Bob is at this point.
SPEAKER_00So that's why the like how Bob is that's why he turns a little, I think, because he wants the notoriety. Notoriety for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he wants like applause and so he wants to make a name for himself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, since that's why when he goes to the governor, he's like, I'm gonna introduce another governor, because I'm a hot shot, and we we we didn't even kill Bob Ford at that point. Right Ford. I'm sorry, uh Jesse James.
SPEAKER_01Bob and he was just like there's I think it's Dick Little and Jess and Bob and the mayor or the governor.
SPEAKER_00Well, the cop, they're in that office. It's the governor. It's the governor in that the bald man? Yeah, he's the one.
SPEAKER_01Because he's like saying, like, oh, um, I think it is either. Maybe it's maybe it's maybe it's not but um or maybe it's like a pinker can or whatever, I don't know. I thought it was the I thought it was the government.
SPEAKER_00He doesn't meet with the governor, that's why he gets tackled by the fucking police because he's trying to acquire.
SPEAKER_01So Did Little and Bob and the governor are right there, and the governor's saying, like, oh, like this guy who gave me, wrote me a letter and said he's gonna stab my, he's gonna rip my heart out and eat it or some shit. Yeah. And then like he's he's going to put a hit on him, or he's gonna he's he's making them want to. And so they're talking, and they say something about like, oh, we need a good man or something. And then Dick Little is like, oh, well, you get this like pointing to Bob, like saying something like, Oh, like this this guy will be this is a good pick for you, or something like that. Yeah, something along those lines. So it's kind of like I don't understand where it's like, is Dick Little when he gets arrested when when he he's working with fucking Bob? I I don't know. Like I said, it doesn't do a good job of explaining it.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't on that part about Dick Little's involvement, at least that initial thing I feel like. And then even I even feel like, or just Bob going and telling them the cops, let's get Dick Little. Like Yeah. Like you didn't I don't understand why you involved unless he was in on it, because it looks like he was in on it afterwards, or they were like, let's work.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and then so it it has to be kind of like that because the whole reason at the build-up at the assassination, it's like they kind of hide right or told to kill Jesse by the government. By then they are. Um but then why they do it, yeah, why they do it is because there's a an article with that says the capture, yeah. And then so he's reading, he tries to hide it, and then he's I remember that, yeah, and he finds it. And then he sees it and then he's reading it and he's like, oh well, I thought something like weren't you up there? I thought you haven't seen them, yeah. Yeah, like he like he kind of put it together that like that shit ain't adding up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like for once the suspicious mind was. Yeah, actually true, yeah. Yeah. And then by then he just let it.
SPEAKER_01And then even still, I don't understand that part either. Like, why does he like oh I guess I'll just sit my gun down? Oh, look at that. That's I don't understand what they were going for with that. Why he turned his back to him, what why he's he was tired of running. He was paranoid. He was paranoid. Okay, I guess. So shoot yourself, I guess. I don't know, I don't know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Or maybe yeah, that's why we'd have it would just be spectacular. Maybe in the book it it explains it better. I'll find out, brother. I will find out. But it's like I don't know, I feel like it won't either. Unless it does, because there's no there's we don't have the fucking journals of Jesse James, but I'm kinda depressed, so I'm gonna die today, you know, or just and that's partly why I think I when I said like this movie didn't make a tr like, how did this movie not make a trillion dollars?
SPEAKER_01And I think there's like an approachability that this movie doesn't have. It does not have approachability. And it's like on average, a person's probably not gonna want to fucking sit through this. It's almost damn near three hours in a in a time when movies were not necessarily all two hours. This movie's like two hours and forty minutes.
SPEAKER_00This is also pretty fucking long. This is still very long. So as long as 2007 when this came out and as long now. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So, okay, so we will tie into this because I know that was one of the major things we want to talk about in this movie about why this didn't do so well. You're right, I agree. Approachability, length. Just because every shot looks like a painting doesn't mean everybody wants to look at a painting, also. They want I know, but I'm gonna tell you that. I don't know how to tell you that. Okay, so what do you think?
SPEAKER_01How is that not true? How do you why do you say that? Because who wouldn't love to fucking watch a beautiful painting?
SPEAKER_00A lot of people that I mean, when's last time to a museum? I've never been. Well then fucking there you go, my guy. I've I love a museum.
SPEAKER_01I don't mean okay, but who's going to want to go to the movies and not want to watch a movie that's well shot?
SPEAKER_00Like that's just because people look so great just turn their brains off and they want to be entertained. They're not going just with how good they think it'll look. And they also don't think it's gonna look that good back then. Who knows how this commercial was or how it was advertised.
SPEAKER_01Well, okay, so If you're to me, like the approachability is to me, like a very big deciding factor. I don't think the way it's shot is.
SPEAKER_00No, you're 100% right. But the thing is, no matter how well it's shot, nobody's gonna know if it's not approachable.
SPEAKER_01So it's almost like it's like it it means shot, so well honestly don't even matter to the average person.
SPEAKER_00Right? It does, but what I'm saying is I'm not s what I'm saying is is that they probably thought it was boring by a guy. Because there's just long ass shots with no dialogue, nothing's happening, and we are looking at this beautiful painting. And knowledgeable people are learned people, people that are a little bit both. Or critics, or the movie eyes, the people that probably because I want to appreciate film. Yeah, I want to double check was this maybe the critics score this high, but again, audiences probably didn't. You know, or was it the other way around kind of thing? But uh, but yes, they they're not going in with it like that. They're just going to go watch, and so some people probably are like, this is supposed to be Brad Pitt and a Western? Like, also, how is the trailer? Did they advertise it as being really action y? Jesse James. Like the last time we heard of Jesse James, wasn't that the Young Guns movie? Wasn't that all about Jesse James? Because Amelia you never seen Young Guns. Oh my god. Okay. Young Guns is fucking Young Guns is great. Uh I'll take your word on it. Thank you, I know. I couldn't even tell you. I actually rewatched both of them kind of recently. Young Guns 1 and Young Guns 2 is one of those weird things. It's kind of like Evil Dead 1 and Evil Dead 2. Do you know the history of kind of where it's like number 2 was almost a remake of number 1? It was like same, same but different. And it's because they got more money the second time around, so they're like, we're gonna kinda do a little more stuff, but we're kinda gonna almost do the exact same thing.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Okay, okay, it's just a weird, it's a whole weird thing, but like because number one kind of ends with I don't even remember, but no, it is Jesse. It's about Jesse James. Because number one's made it, or number two turns it different where it's like he's Jesse James and he survived to be a hundred years old. He didn't actually get together under four. Yeah. And so he's talking to some old guy like a 1950s on the side of the road type shit. Like it's it's one of those. It's a little weird. Okay. Um, but yeah, so but yes, but young guns is another is it just James or only showing you're gonna be a good one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like so like you when like the casual audience or the audience thinks of Jesse James, they think of something like that.
SPEAKER_00Yes, they would. They probably that's probably another one right there. And then again, it's maybe the it's also about word of mouth. Like, let's be real. Opening weekend was only $100,000. That's insane. They did not make a lot of money opening weekend, and even then it probably would have just been like the critics I said, or not a lot of people saying word to mouth, like, go watch this, it's fucking badass. They're probably like, it was a whole lot of build-up, and then the fucking guy just dies at the end, and then the other guy, you know, it's like it's a whole lot of buildup for nothing, I'd say.
SPEAKER_01And again, which kind of falls to the approachability where it's like, do I want to go through a whole bunch of nothing for that? Yeah, like am I gonna watch that for this boring shit? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00And I think No Country for Old Men was even harder. It's probably something similar, and maybe they got duped by that. Well, I don't want to say duped, because No Country did perform amazing and stuff. It did do good. It did do well, yeah. Yeah, it did critical claim, yeah. Yes. And it's like you've also probably got to imagine they probably only had enough like goodwill for one of those to succeed well in a year kind of thing. Like, does that make sense? Like you know about the Project Billy part.
SPEAKER_01Although okay, yeah, yeah, okay, I get you.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know, because it's like, oh, we already saw kind of a Western movie with beautiful fucking cinematography where we're looking at landscaping and sometimes and it was 40 minutes shorter, you know? And and it's it's kind of a western without being a western, because we're set in Texas in the 80s, but it's like, you know, those are the vibes you get off. You got Tommy Lee Jones on there and you got Pierce Brosnan walking around the cowboy hat. And then you do So here's another thing John Rowland. No, I what did I say? Pierce Brosnan. I did, I keep saying that. I always felt thank you. Um I don't know why I confused them. I literally was like, wait, Pierce Rosen. Yeah. I just like to do that. So does he mean by that? PB and JB, baby. Um PB. Uh what was I gonna say? Um Antoine Shagur was like as menacing and scary as Brad Pitt was playing Jesse, nowhere near as terrifying as Antoine Shagur, also, I feel like. Yeah. For sure. And so also in this movie, it's like Jesse James is your antagonist, but it's also who you're fucking obsessed with. Like it's very weird because for a while, like, I don't know, it was one of those sad turns, because that makes sense. Like if we're talking about protagonist antagonist stuff. Or even just who's the bad guy or what's scary, it's like Jesse's kind of crazy, which is scary, and I get, but like for the first half, our our Robert Ford is obsessed with him, and then the second half it's like, no, then he kills him, and then he was kind of sad about it, you know?
SPEAKER_01It's like Yeah. Like you know, the narrator even says, like, oh, he regretted killing him and stuff like that, so it's like And then even then they're I don't know, like it's a narrator thing.
SPEAKER_00Where maybe in 2007 they didn't want narrators either.
SPEAKER_01It's all there's definitely like a you at the surface level of like, oh that sh sort of show don't tell where it's like a narrator could be seen as like you're just telling me these things because you don't know how I'm not saying that's what it is. No. But it's like like you could look at it as like, oh, that's just a lazy way of giving me information. Yes, which is also true. Which could which could be a negative.
SPEAKER_00Which is also true. Or how people could look at it. But this is also like like we're uh but this is also adapted from a book. So of course you're gonna kind of follow what the book says and what the books tell you, and like that's right out the book too, that whole little fucking first paragraph. Yeah, and it's just like and I and and I feel like what this movie does on its own is how it cuts all the credits out, you know, just you just get right into it, dude. Like, which is it's a good stylistic choice. I'm not even saying that that helped or not, I'm just I like that and pointing it out. Uh but just the fact that oh god, what did I gonna say? I fucking forgot, right?
SPEAKER_01We're talking about like why it wouldn't do well.
SPEAKER_00Why it wouldn't do well, why it didn't do well, and we were thinking what the fuck did I just say though right before about the opening sequence? Or no, how there's no credits in the entire movie game stuff and then that's how it's a little different in that sense, but I don't think it helps anything else. I fucking I lost the main point on that. But keep going about that. Was this movie's internal stuff, I suppose. Like, what what what could be viewed about this movie that wasn't approachable, this and that. What we also have to look into is what came out in theaters at the same time. And then, like, I was telling you that stuff, so like I know what was it? The same Friday this came out, good luck, Chuck, with uh fucking Dane Cook and Jessica Alba came out. So that's comedy, comedy, a bunch of people are gonna listen. I saw that shit. Dane Cook was pretty big at that time. Dane Cook was huge at that time. And Jessica Alba was huge. Both always big. We're gonna put them in together and it's a movie where he can't fuck her, but then he's trying to fuck her the whole time. Let's go. Or yeah, and then Resident Evil Extinction, 3D. It was kind of a big 3D release where they were trying to tentatively put 3D shit out. Uh, but you know, everybody that would want to see something actually is gonna go see that, because that's gonna be a lot of audience members. The Jane Austen book club, that'll take away any fucking I guess I don't know. If you want to look at the four quadrants, because it's like m uh let's just say male, female, and then the other aspects are like old and young, or the age groups, whatever it is. And like, you know, those are the four quadrants that you're trying to get through. So it's like Jane Austen book club where we took on like your female quadrant, maybe some older quadrant people, whoever likes Jane Austen. Into the Wild was another movie that's supposed to be maybe it's not as beautiful as Roger Deakin's fucking landscape paintings, but it's another one of those movies where you're isn't the one with like monsters in it? No, not at all. No, this is the Jack Kira one. You're thinking about where the wild things are. There you go. Yeah. This is the one where the fucking kid just graduates college, cuts every cuts all his credit cards, and just I just want to go live and travel the world. Yeah, I want to go live the wild. And in fact, he does that. He dies because he eats berries in Alaska and he eats the wrong kind of berries and dies in a gutted out of us. Like it's a true story about this kid that happened in real life. And uh but that movie was I think that movie was a little bit more critically acclaimed, just a little bit more, because it was like we didn't spend it's not like it's art pieces, but it's just good acting pieces, I think. Because this it's the oh my god, Speed Racer. Speed Racer is the actor? Yeah, he's the main actor of uh Into the Wild. Who is he? Emile Hirsch, I believe. There we go. Yeah. Um he uh and then I think Vince Vaughn's in it. Like Vince Vaughn has a good little cameo, like a lot of good big famous people have like little cameos in that movie because he's meeting people and he works his way up north or whatever. From like New York or some shit, I don't know. Uh but I feel like that's gonna be another movie that's not a lot of action that might take fucking viewers away from this too. Like not that it was crazy big, but apparently they were all bigger than JJ. And then that was like one, two, three, four, five. Like that was the funny thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think that's that's something too, because like that mat like that that literally matters. Yeah, like am I going to watch a fucking three-hour snooze fest, or am I gonna watch something a little more crazy?
SPEAKER_00Or I want to go see part three of the zombie movies we're watching. Or I want to see the video games. Or it's like I want to go see fucking Dane Cook Bang Jessica Alba, you know? Yeah. And then Jane Austen, I couldn't even tell you why I want to see that. Into the Wild, I could tell you why, because I read the book. That's another movie based on a book, because unlike- I mean, so is Jesse James, but Into the Wild had hype. Well, I guess they're both kind of true stories. But Into the Wild was a more recent true story, because it really was a kid that in the 60s he did this, and that Jack Kerouac wrote the book. Actually, now I'm fucking confused about how real that one is. Is it about Jack Kerouac and he is about he just dies up there? Or did Jack Kerouac just wrote the fucking book about it? But either way, it was some realness to it, because this kid really did fucking go up there and he's got a big thing.
SPEAKER_01It had like some pop culture reference, like not even pop culture relevance.
SPEAKER_00It was real, yeah, because it was real. Like, that's all I know. There were just a hype about it that he was real or not. And then, um but then you also like damn, I'm gonna give you another number that is just kind of disappointing about it, because what'd I say? About 30 million, it costs about 30 million to me. It didn't tell me anything about marketing or whatever, just it says budget 30 million. So I'm just keeping that as is.
SPEAKER_01Supposedly the budget is different from like the marketing, but it's usually the exact same amount, roughly. That's what people say. I don't know, I don't believe it.
SPEAKER_00I don't really think but like there is how marketing could be in the budget, but it could also be yeah, but then I know that the companies spend actually no, it's not. They could be kind of back in the day and stuff, but like no, it's more like marketing is a separate cost, but the budget is how much the actual production costs. That's what I'm going off of. Yeah. How much it costs to get the cameras and all these actors out and actually make the movie. Yes. Versus. Aside from selling it. Yeah, which is another yeah. So we'll just say it's 30 million. This movie only made 3.9 million in America. Like, and then in its total however many weeks it was in the box office, which I think from like September to I forgot where, didn't even tell me.
SPEAKER_01And you would think that it would be something major.
SPEAKER_00You would think. Why would you think that?
SPEAKER_01It's just because of the actors because of the actors.
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, at that point, who's really famous in that movie? It's just really Brad Pitt, bro, and Sam and Sam Shepherd. Jeremy Renner and the Hobbit. That's fucking true, actually. Cassie Casey Affleck is just Ben Affleck's little brother at that point. I that might even be his first like big major role, bro. I think so. It's a cast full of kind of nobodies then where Brad Pitt. Yeah, back then it was. And like I said, like you also have to think that if Resident Evil Extinction is in 3D, they're gonna sell they need actual theater space for the 3D version, non-3D version. Good luck, Chuck's gonna have its own theaters, Jane Austen's gonna have theaters, and the wild has theaters, maybe JJ has theaters, or he'll have less showings, so it's good luck with the other. Yeah, even that little fucking those itty bitty things, but across the hundreds of theaters in the state and wide. Yep. And then it only made 15 million worldwide. Once you come in with all the extra shit. Yeah, dude. It'll it made half its fucking budget total afterwards, bro. And so, like, not that that has anything to do with why it failed during, but just like afterwards, because it's not gonna be no sequel.
SPEAKER_01You know, like Damn, he ain't gonna be neat as nation just mean by the Kyro 4 2.
SPEAKER_00Nothing was gonna beat that fucking port code, bro. It was because it's a fucking dude who just gets blown up no matter what we do in the game. Like, it's a fucking NPC that has to die.
SPEAKER_02Damn. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Oh. But yes, okay, we're gonna go with this. Those are just the 30, 15 half half of its budget worldwide. Yeah, bro, which is crazy. And that's that means it's after it's domestic total, like that includes it. So it's like but I also so when I got confused by what date this movie came out in, because I saw something that told me October first. And so I typed that in, and it just it was still in Theaters in October, but it happened that Across the Universe, Darjeeling Limited, those are the like two movies I recog I recognize that came out also. And I was like across you know what those ones are? Across the Universe is like the weird Beatles musical they made. Which I'm not sure how it did, but I'm like that could that could it interfere with it, maybe? Yeah, that could interfere. That would guard some interest. That could steal some seats. And then the Darjeeling Limited. That one could never even heard of that. Have you heard of Wes Anderson? Yeah. Um it's honestly probably his weakest movie. And it might be the first one after World Tennis Buns, or the second one after World Tennebtions. And I don't know, like I haven't even I haven't honestly I have not watched World Tennis Buns. Like I think I might have seen, like, my mom had it on when I was a kid, and so I saw I remember Bits of these if that, but like I technically feel like I haven't seen it, so I have to rewatch it. But I know that that one is way more kind of serious and depressing than anything else he's fucking done since then, and then that one was done so early on and so awesome saw us about it, I guess. And he already had his style all the way back then, I guess, and but anyways, like Dargani Limited though probably isn't a good one, at least to me. And I kind of went through a lot of, I think I won't gone through all of us. He was another director that came up. I don't think we mentioned this during the Columbia talk, but he was another director I realized I actually kind of did go through all the shit, like kind of in high school, kind of right after high school, I think. Um my cousin put me on more, I think. The same cousin I tried to show me a big box. He he got me into West Iron right at the right time. I think it was around when Moonrise Kingdom came out and showed it to me. Yeah, and I was like, oh my god, love does exist. Uh and so, but yeah, I was like, maybe that just there was a lot of options going on in this fucking time of year, bro. I guess. I mean, they probably didn't know how good these movies were at the time. Yeah. Here we are now, that's why it's just all it's all pure conjuncture afterthought, but it's like that shit matters that they had those other movies that could be a little more exciting than this one, I guess. Yeah. And it's just like, damn, bro. And I also forgot to double check if it was nominated or not. Do you know off the top of your head it was nominated for anybody?
SPEAKER_01You know, I think Casey might have been nominated for a while. We're gonna we're gonna double check.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Deacon's got nominated for sure, bro. I want to know if Brad got you also think about this. Also, remember when I said this was produced by Brad Pitt's company, Plan B. Plan B. Now, this could have been one of the first things he did too. Or I want to do this week. I'm gonna put myself in dead game.
SPEAKER_01Like this is my project, and I want to do this character.
SPEAKER_00Yep, so that's and so because of that too, that there's not a lot of push for that. Other maybe other bigger people didn't give a fuck about it. You know, it's his own studio thing. Damn, that's just so weak. That's a stove, bro. Okay. Uh I'm looking for a denomination for two Oscars. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay. I want to see what they are. It might take me to a different place. Damn boy, you good. Fucking Deacons in Africa, yeah. And then Deacons won for like the actual guilds. He won for in Australia. Film critics. Oh my god. These are just a bunch of extra. Wow, dude. They're all about Casey and Oh! He got oh so? They got a nomination for best original score in the cave.
SPEAKER_02Alright.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man. Um, but yeah, everything else is just fucking. Oh, Deacons won in Florida. Yay. And Golden Globes, Casey Ashley got nominated. So yeah. Yeah, yeah, man. It was just those two. So even then, so they at least they recognize A how goaded Deacons. Actually, I wanted to click on Deacons now. Because Deacons is just fucking peacens. And then I'm proud of that. Casey. Look at that! It was 2049. But I think Deacons is so old. He might have done the original one, but I'm not gonna lie. Whoa. Uh 88 fucking movies, bro. That's awesome. We'll go through that in a second. Hail Caesar! Hey! Fuck yeah, bro. Okay, yeah, we're gonna go through this real quick. Because we're gonna see what else ones. True grit. That's crazy. And a serious man. That's already three brothers already. And then oh, Revolutionary Road. We're fucking This is all 2000 fucking the tenth. Assassination of Jesse James, baby. No country for old man. Wow. He had No Country in the Valley of uh Allah Eli. I thought it was called Elijah, honestly, back in the day but it's.
SPEAKER_01I thought it was in the Valley of Eli, but Oh but it was fucking they're calling it Eli.
SPEAKER_00And then Jesse James. That's three movies 2007, bro.
SPEAKER_01That's also Tommy Lee Johns, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's the sad war movie. Yeah, the war movie where Yeah, yeah. The Lady Killers. That's another Cohen Brother movie. Mm-hmm. And then Intolerable Cruelty is another one. That's already fucking five. Beautiful mind. The man who wasn't there. Six. Oh brother, we're out there. Seven. Dude, he did The Hurricane? That's a good Gen Zelda movie. I just saw that. It's on Netflix again right now. Big Lebazi. Fargo. Headsucker proxy. About to ask you if you knew about that movie. I'm only naming their Cohen brother movies. His Cohen Brother movies, yeah. Barton Fink. Oh my god. And then that might be it. But I wanna I'm gonna keep going because I wanna see if he also did do original um what's it called? No, he didn't. The um the original Blade Runner, but it looked like he did not. But yes, but fucking Deacons is goaded, man. Oh my god. Okay. But yes, I also don't know why then that did not generate the fucking hype like that. But again, I don't know, bro. All we have is a speculation now. What we what happened and how it made us feel because fucking couple culture young men like us, and I fucking I really I appreciate this movie, and thank you for bringing it back to me. Because like I said, I think I was expecting something more action-y the first time I watched it, but this was also like 2013, like the summer I think I graduated high school, and I spent like five months uh uh at my grandparents' house, you know, in the Bay Area, and just living up north and stuff. And then I just went through my grandpa's movies and I just watched it last year with my grandpa. And so we watched this. I don't know if I fucking either I put it on while he was at you know, while he was at his appointments, or he came home while I was I don't know, but I I just remember I watched it with him and then I was like, oh okay, that's a good movie. I was just like, honestly, I didn't even remember Brad Pitt being that menacing. I just barely I only basically just remembered the end, like I told you. I remember how, oh that's that's a dusty picture or whatever, and then Bat shoots him. And then I remember Zoe, Zoe Dechanette. And then of course I remember that he gets shot at the end too. So I was just like, okay. So like that's all I remembered until fucking rewatching it now. And then like, Zoey shit, this cast is fucking goaded, bro. Like, I didn't even know. So Dick Little, that will guess. Oh, I didn't write that down. Oh, sure, we just missed him. Uh Dick Little is in Parks and Rec. I don't know. Yeah, yeah. You told me that. Oh, okay. I told you that. Okay.
SPEAKER_01I mean I've I've recognized him and stuff. I've probably I've probably recognized him. From what else though? I don't think it's the only two things. Oh okay. Yeah, that's okay. Like at the top of my head, like I don't even remember him in Parks and Rec, but I've seen it and I've I've seen that show and I know I've recognized I know I've seen him because I seen him on TV and I was like, oh, that's fucking the guy who did assassination. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So wait, so then how did you come across this movie then? We didn't even talk into that. How did you decide this movie?
SPEAKER_01Um It was on one on the like HBO, I think, like after it had come out.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Uh also one of the best channels. Several years after 2007 then.
SPEAKER_01Or closer. Probably a little closer because HBO used to like put movies out pretty fast. Yeah. So um yeah, I remember watching it like on what and I I don't know if it's necessarily HBO, but it could have been like one of them. Yeah, yeah. It could have been one of them. And I just put it on and watched it, and then the music for sure stood out and it was. It was like the music got you that far back, dude, right at the beginning. And then it was always just like it was like even now, like I'm still kind of confused on how some of the things worked, and I'm and I've always it was always like you're right about how more confusing, like and it didn't always I didn't always understand the story. Um, but I've always just watched it. And then I bought it like after I had uh got a job and I was buying movies. I was like, oh I gotta buy this movie. Oh and then I bought it, and then I would watch it here and there, and then I recently got back into it because our co our talk for No Country just kind of reminded me of Peak, and then I was just I was gonna watch Rick and Morty on my like on my uh account that I have like my digital copies on.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01And I had seen the Assassination Just James up top because it was something I had actually bought like digitally because of the Blu-ray didn't come with a digital copy. And so it was up top because it was like one of the more recent things I bought. And so I just played it again and I just watched it recently, and then I just broke this shit is so fucking really great. Okay. And it's just like it was incredible.
SPEAKER_00Dude, I okay, I I've been wanting to re-watch it too, but I want to rent it again. But I don't want to buy it on Apple, I want to try and get physical. So I was gonna be like, okay. I'm sure you can find one. I can find it. If not, I'll just order this.
SPEAKER_01You know what else I want to fucking find? Street Kings. Have you seen that? I haven't seen it, but I know of it. Dude, I've loved that movie since he came. Keanu Reeves? Oh, it's Keanu Reeves? Street Kings, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't know which movie this is. I'm thinking uh He's a cop.
SPEAKER_01Um uh not Mobile. I'm gonna look this up. Uh Forrest Whitaker.
SPEAKER_00Forrest Whitaker is in this?
SPEAKER_01Um the guy from Benchwarmers at I Am 12. I don't know if you've ever seen that movie.
SPEAKER_00I have seen Bench Warmers Warmers.
SPEAKER_01Huh?
SPEAKER_00I've seen you said Benchwarmers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. With Napoleon Dynamite? Yeah. And then the guy that says I am 12? The Mexican guy or the Hispanic guy?
SPEAKER_00I don't remember it that way.
SPEAKER_01The other team higher, like a grown-ass like grown-ass minority guy that's fucking baseball. I don't remember who that guy is. I mean, I yeah, I just recognize it from bits and pieces.
SPEAKER_00Um what movie was the Entertainer? Streaking. Streaking. Excuse me. Honestly, the cover of this movie is coming into my head, but I've never watched it.
SPEAKER_01There's a second one with Ray Leota. I never watched it. Oh, Streaking. Yeah, Cedric Entertainer, the game common.
SPEAKER_00Streaking's too motorcycle, too, now.
SPEAKER_01Wow, it's 2000. It is really good. Uh fucking Chris Evans is in it, bro. Bro.
SPEAKER_00And what? Dislusion by the death of his wife is implicated in the murder of an officer and must struggle to clear himself. David Ayer! Ah. He did the the Hugh Laurie? You got Dr. House up in that shit? Bro, okay, I see Chris.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Yeah, dude, I highly recommend watching that movie if you can find it somewhere.
SPEAKER_00Okay, wait, and how did those ones just come up?
SPEAKER_01Because you said Because uh Assassination of Jesse James is it was kind of hard for me to find on Blu-ray. Okay, and then this is what you want to find.
SPEAKER_00Does it have to be Blu-ray? Is that flipped? For me it does. Fair enough. Okay, does it have to be so your physical media question? I'm gonna ask you this. Well, you answered it partially right there. Do you do still book stuff? Are you into still books? Are you still books?
SPEAKER_01But if not. If I find a good deal, yeah. Okay. But it doesn't have to be the whatever like basic copy. It could be steelbook. I like still book. I have the Big Lebowski steelbook case.
SPEAKER_00That's been fast. I have the departed. The departed still case? Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh. And I had a Xbox One, which was a Blu-ray disc, which would be Blu-rays. Um I had sold a majority of my DVDs, I think I sold them all. And the Departed was one of the ones. The Departed was like the first one I bought because I went to Best Buy and I saw it in Steel Case, and I was like, fuck yeah. District 9 I have on Steel Case. Um I gotta watch that one again. That's a really good one.
SPEAKER_00I love that one.
SPEAKER_01Dude, that's one I feel like it I feel like it's one of those things where I saw it once because I was just like, You want to talk about um like something that like takes me back in the to a time which I don't think that's necessarily what you do when you're talking about these movies that mean something, but like that movie too. Yeah, yeah, like watching that movie, I remember that that movie came out August 8th?
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Or August 14th or something like that, two out of nine.
SPEAKER_00August eighteenth is a cousin's birthday.
SPEAKER_01It's either August 8th or August 14th, or something like that. Something within that time frame.
SPEAKER_00Wait, oh my god, okay.
SPEAKER_01What movie was it again? District 9.
SPEAKER_00Okay. District 9. Okay, and what about it?
SPEAKER_01And I remember 2009? Yeah, 2009. Yeah, 2009, so that's important. Does it say the uh not yet?
SPEAKER_00I'm not looking now. Um listening.
SPEAKER_01But so that that was I was a that was a movie I was very hyped for. And I remember thinking like because I was so nervous about entering high school, and I was like, by the time I'm already like if I want to go watch this movie, I would have already dealt with entering high school. So like high school started. 2008 to 2009, right? 2009.
SPEAKER_002008 to 2009. You started in the fall of 2008, and freshman year would have ended 2009.
SPEAKER_01No, I started in the fall of 2009. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Sure. Because they went at nine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because I graduated 13.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so did I.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00So then, then 10 to 13. Okay, you graduated 13. 11 to 12. You graduated 13. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You graduated 13. Yeah. So you don't graduate the exact the year you start. No, you're graduated. Yeah. So 12. No, so in no. You pretty tell me. You when when did you graduate?
SPEAKER_002013, though.
SPEAKER_01What month? June. So second semester of the school.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01First semester is the year before.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, 2012.
SPEAKER_01So 2009, I was in the ninth grade. Second uh of the second half? Second later. Second half of the year is first semester, basically, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, the first half of the year.
SPEAKER_01First half of the year is second half. So first half of the year is second semester, right?
SPEAKER_00Do you mean the first half of the actual year not the school? Yes. Yes. Okay, sorry.
SPEAKER_01So 2009, I entered ninth grade. That's how I can that's that's how I remember, because 09, I was in ninth.
SPEAKER_00So you mean the end of 09?
SPEAKER_01I entered in. Okay, yes, that's what I meant. And so I was nervous about entering high school. And then I was thinking to myself, like, well, by the time this movie comes out and I can go watch it, I would have already like be done with entering high school. Like, I would have already been worried, I would have already done it.
SPEAKER_00No, okay, that's where I'm confused. If you're saying 2009, right? Mm-hmm. You would have been beginning school, bro. You wouldn't have been in school already.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01So So this movie's So the beginning of 09, I left middle school. Yes. The later half of 09, I was going to enter. Yes.
SPEAKER_00And you're saying so around So before you entered school, you're saying you would have been done with school.
SPEAKER_01I started I started in August. Okay. So I started a couple days before the movie came out.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01And so I was thinking, if I can ever watch this movie, like by the time I watched this movie, I would have already I would have already been in high school and I wouldn't be worried about it anymore. That's all. I'm still lost, but you are adorable. I get it. No, you don't get it. You just said you're lost.
SPEAKER_00No, I am because I'll be done with high school. I'm not done with high school. Okay, that's where you lose me, bro.
SPEAKER_01I would have been done with worrying about high school. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00See, that's where you fucking lost me.
SPEAKER_01I'm pretty sure I said that. No, I think done worried. Check it back. Oh, we'll check it back. Check it back.
SPEAKER_00Check it back. Check it back. Even that's like done worrying. But that is adorable.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, so back to like a movie that put me in.
SPEAKER_00Because you would have been. Because you already would have went to the bottom.
SPEAKER_01There is some sentimental value. Yeah, there is some sentimental value to that.
